Box Score SYRACUSE, NY -- The No. 2 RIT (4-0) men's lacrosse team tallied three fourth quarter goals en route to a 12-11 win over No. 6 SUNY Cortland (1-2) at the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University Wednesday. The Tigers run their regular-season unbeaten streak to 28 games and have now won three straight over the Red Dragons.
Shots were 38-31 in favor of the Tigers, who went 2-for-2 on their man-up chances. The Tigers held a slight 40-38 ground ball edge, and cleared the ball 13-of-20 times.
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) and
Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) led the Tigers with three goals apiece.
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) added a goal and an assist and won a handful of big faceoffs late, while
Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) tallied two goals and added an assist.
Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) picked up his fourth win on the season, making seven saves.
Zach Hopps and Mike Cantelli led Cortland with three goals apiece. Matt Rakoczy added a pair of goals, while TJ deLyra had a goal and an assist. Scott Tota took the loss in net for the Red Dragons, making 13 saves.
RIT led 4-2 after the first quarter on goals from Kiesa,
Mikey Gulasey (Medina, OH/Western Reserve Academy), Lee and Gillies. The Red Dragons opened the scoring at the 9:29 mark of the quarter on a goal by Hopps.
The Tigers answered scoring four straight goals. Lee tied the game at 8:40 of the first quarter off a feed from Gillies. Gulasey gave the Tigers their first lead of the game on his second tally of the season at 7:04 of the first quarter. Kiesa scored off a feed from Gillies at 3:56 of the quarter, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) scooped up his own face-off win, starting RIT on the break. He eventually got the ball backl and scored with 3:49 to play in the opening quarter. Cortland rounded out the first quarter scoring on Hopps' second goal of the quarter, making it 4-2 RIT.
Mike Cantelli pulled the Red Dragons to within 4-3 on his goal early in the second quarter. He tallied again at 7:29 of the second quarter, tying the score at 4-4.
Lee gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead on his second goal of the game at 2:14 of the second quarter off an assist from
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry). Both teams had chances at the end of the half, but could break through as RIT took a 5-4 lead into the locker room.
Hossack opened the second half scoring on a beauty of a goal. He took a pass from Gillies at the top of the box, got around the defender and scored into the top corner giving the Tigers a 6-4 lead.
The Red Dragons came right back, tallying three straight goals, taking a 7-6 lead on a goal by James Stavrakis with 8:12 to play in the third quarter. Hopps and deLyra also tallied for Cortland as they siezed momentum.
RIT answered right back on consecutive goals from Lee, Kiesa and Aquin, taking a 9-7 lead on Aquin's first goal of the game with 4:57 to play in the quarter.
Rakoczy pulled the Red Dragons to within one on his goal from outside with 4:57 to play in the third, making it 9-8 Tigers. Billy Davis converted on a failed clearing attempt by the Tigers, tying the score at 9-9 with 1:30 to play.
Cantelli opened the fourth quarter scoring on his third goal of the game with 13:40. He drove and fired a well-placed shot top shelf that beat Johnston, giving the Red Dragons a 10-9 lead. RIT tied the score at 10-10 on Kiesa's third goal of the game at 7:27 of the fourth. Lee spotted a cutting Kiesa and fired a pass that deflected off of Kiesa's stick and into the net for the goal.
Aquin tallied his second of the game at 4:11 with a man-up goal off a feed from Gillies to give RIT the lead for good. Gillies started the play with a dodge at the top of the box. He spotted a cutting Aquin, who buried his shot into the top corner giving the Tigers an 11-10 lead.
Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy) gave the Tigers a 12-10 lead on his eventual game-winning goal with 3:02 to play. He scooped up a loose ball in front of the Cortland net and scored.
Rakoczy tallied his second of the game on a man-up chance for the Red Dragons with eight seconds to play. He fired a shot from distance that beat Johnston clean, making it 12-11 RIT.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, March 14 when the Tigers face No. 5 Cabrini College at 5:30 p.m. at the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University.
