CLERMONT, FL - The RIT softball team (1-7) dropped a pair of one-run heartbreakers to Lawrence Universtity, 5-4 in eight innings, and 4-3 to the University of Chicago on Tuesday afternoon at the National Training Center.
In the opener against Lawrence, Taylor Dodson's double in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in the winning run for the Vikings.
The game was tied at 4-4 heading to the eighth, and using the international tiebreaker rule, Sam Killian (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) was placed at second for the Tigers (1-6). A ground ball moved Killian to third, but a lineout and flyout ended the inning.
Amanda Jaskolski started at second to begin the bottom half of the eighth, and Dodson ripped the first pitch for a double to plate the winning run.
Lawrence took a 1-0 lead in the second before RIT took the lead right back with two runs in the top of the third. McKenzie Martin (Deposit, NY/Deposit) led off with a single and scored on a double by Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast). Sarah Wolcott (Cohocton, NY/Wayland-Cohocton) drove in Cook to make it 2-1 RIT. After Lawrence tied the game, RIT added two more runs in the fourth, as Martin and Alexa Farner (Gowanda, NY/Gownanda) drove in Killian and Amber Libby (Waterboro, ME/Massabesic). Lawrence tied it up in the fifth with two runs.
Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) went the distance, allowed eight hits and took the loss for the Tigers. Wolcott was 4-for-4 with a run batted in, while Martin was 3-for-5 with a run scored and RBI.
In game two vs. Chicago, RIT led 2-0 after one inning, as Martin and Farner reached base and scored on a single by Wolcott. in the fifth, Tori Blaker (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post West) and Martin had back-to-back doubles to re-take a 3-2 lead. The lead lasted until the bottom of the seventh inning, as Chicago would score twice with one out to snatch the win from the Tigers.
Lauren Mahar (Rotterdam, NY/Schalmont) took the hard-luck loss for the Tigers, allowing just five hits and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings.
Wolcott went 6-for-7 on the afternoon for RIT.
RIT wraps up play in Florida on Wednesday against Carleton College at 9 a.m. and Oberlin College at 11 a.m.
