ORLANDO, FL -- The RIT (2-3) women's lacrosse team played its first game in Florida Saturday morning, falling to Western New England University (WNEU), 11-10.
Shots were 34-20 in favor of the Golden Bears. RIT grabbed 21 ground balls to 23 for Western New England, while the Tigers were 14-of-17 on clearing attempts. Senior
Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) took the loss in net, making 15 saves.
Freshman
Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led RIT with six points on five goals and an assist.
Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) chipped in four points on two goals and two assists, while
Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) tallied two goals and added an assist.
Kristina Glitch (Rochester, NY/Rush-Henrietta) tallied her first collegiate goal, and
Sydney DaCosta (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) and
Mariah Hettel (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) each had an assist.
Jessica Scannapieco led Western New England with seven goals. Kaitlynn Stevens added four points on two goals and two assists, while Brooke Kumnick and Taylor Scialdone each tallied a goal and an assist. Emily Castleman got the win in net for the Golden Bears, making eight saves.
Western New England jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the first half on goals from Kumnick and Scialdone. Kumnick tallied off a feed from Stevens, while Scialdone's goal came off a feed from Kumnick.
Mandell got RIT on the scoreboard on her goal at 21:12 of the first half. She scored on a drive from the midfield, cutting the Western New England lead to 2-1.
The Golden Bears rattled off three straight goals, taking a 5-1 lead on Scannapieco's first goal of the game at 17:21. Stevens tallied the other two Western New England goals.
The Tigers responded, closing out the first half on a four-goal run. Livecchi scored three of RIT's four goals, including the game-tying goal with eight seconds to play, tying the score at 5-5. Mandell added an unassisted goal with 6:13 to play, pulling the Tigers to within 5-3.
Glitch opened the second half scoring, tallying her first goal of the season off a feed from DaCosta giving the Tigers their first lead of the game at 6-5.
Scannapieco answered back for Western New England, tallying her second of the game at 26:45, tying the score at 6-6. Sarkis scored her first off a feed from Mandell at 25:56 of the second half, giving the Tigers a 7-6 lead.
The lead went back and forth until the 17:43 mark when Western New England ran off two straight goals, taking a 9-8 lead on Scannapieco's fourth and fifth goals of the game. The Tigers answered right back with two straight goals, taking a 10-9 lead on Livecchi's fith of the game. Sarkis' second of the game with 11:33 to play tied the score at 9-9.
Scannapieco tied the game at 10-10 on her sixth goal off a feed from Stevens with 6:23 to play. She tallied the game winner with 4:44 to play off an assist from Ashley Brunner.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, March 24 when the Tigers face No. 5 Colby College at 11 a.m. in Orlando, Florida.
