CLERMONT, FL - The RIT softball team (0-2) opened the 2015 season by dropping a pair of games at the Dot Richardson Spring games on Saturday. RIT fell to D'Youville College (3-3) by a score of 1-0, and lost to No. 17 North Central College (6-0), 16-1 in five innings at Hancock Field.
In the opener against D'Youville, RIT starter
Sierra Valentine (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) was excellent, striking out 10 batters in the complete-game effort, allowing just three hits and one run. The Spartans would get back-to-back doubles to plate the only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Offensively,
Amanda Cook (Royal Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) reached base three times, going 2-for-2 with a walk.
Emma Sarles (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) had RIT's other hit, a two out single in the top of the seventh inning.
Against North Central,
Alexa Farner (Gowanda, NY/Gownanda) hit a run-scoring double in the third inning, plating Mackenzie Martin, who reached on a fielders choice. Farner had two of RIT's five hits, with Martin, Sarles, and
Sam Killian (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) also recording singles. North Central scored a run in the first inning, three in the second, two in the third, and five in both the fourth and fifth innings.
RIT is right back in action on Sunday, against Carthage College at 1 p.m. and Hamilton College at 3 p.m. Both games are at the National Training Center.
