POTSDAM, NY -- The No. 2 RIT (7-0, 1-0 Liberty League) men's lacrosse team opened Liberty League with a 16-7 win at Clarkson University (2-3, 0-1 Liberty League) in Liberty League action on a cold and snowy afternoon from Hantz Turf Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Tigers run their regular season unbeaten streak to 31 games.
Shots were 49-28 in favor of the Tigers, who went 2-for-2 on their man-up chances. The Tigers held a 29-15 ground ball edge, and cleared the ball 16-of-19 times.
Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) led RIT with six points on five goals and an assist.
Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) added three goals and two assists, while
Brad Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) tallied a goal, had two assists and grabbed three ground balls.
Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) and
Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) each scored a pair of goals.
Jake Quay (Latham, NY/Shaker) went 9-of-14 from the face-off "X", while
Steven Ricci (Rochester, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) went 7-of-12 on draws.
Matt Hossack (Port Perry, Ontario/Port Perry) had an assist, grabbed six ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Pat Johnston (Norwell, MA/Norwell) got the win in net for the Tigers, making nine saves.
Ryan St. Croix, Sam Groves and Ryan DaRin each tallied two goals to lead the Golden Knights. St. Croix finished with three points, adding an assist, while Corey Harrington and Mark Nortz each had two assists. Nick Strandholm took the loss in net for Clarkson, making 21 saves.
RIT led 6-2 after the first quarter, and 10-4 at halftime. Clarkson outscored the Tigers, 3-2 in the third quarter, but RIT outscored Clarkson, 4-0 in the fourth to pull away for the Win.
Lee opened the scoring for RIT on his goal off an assist from Hossack on the fast-break at 13:46 of the opening quarter on his 17th of the season. Aquin tallied an unassisted goal at 11:07, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
After a DaRin goal cut the Tigers lead to 2-1, goals from Gillies and Aquin at 8:17 and 6:37, respectively, extended the RIT lead to 4-1. Lee had the assists on both the Gillies and Aquin goals.
Matthew Milne tallied off a feed from DaRin at 4:59 of the first quarter, making the score 4-2, RIT.
Mikey Gulasey (Medina, OH/Western Reserve Academy) and Kiesa closed out the first quarter with goals, giving RIT a 6-2 lead.
Dave Shuster (Columbus, OH/St. Charles Prep) and Warren had the assists on the Tigers' goals.
St. Croix opened the second quarter scoring on his ninth goal of the season off a feed from Nortz, making it 6-3 RIT. The Tigers rattled off three straight goals from Aquin and Lee (two), extending the RIT lead to 6-3 late in the first half. St. Croix added a second goal late in the half, while
Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored with 10 seconds to play, giving RIT a 10-4 halftime lead.
Clarkson came back in the third quarter, outscoring RIT, 3-2 over that stretch. The Tigers were penalized five times in the quarter, leading to a pair of man-up goals for the Golden Knights.
Kiesa opened the quarter with his goal off a feed from Gillies, giving the Tigers an 11-4 lead. Consecutive man-up goals from Groves at 9:32 and 7:59, respectively nade it 11-6 RIT. DaRin tallied an even-strength goal with 6:29 to play in the third, cutting the RIT lead to 11-7.
Aquin broke the Clarkson scoring run with his fourth goal of the game off an assist from Gillies with 4:14 to play, giving the Tigers a 12-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
RIT kicked it into another gear, outscoring Clarkson 4-0 in the fourth quarter.
Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy) opened the scoring on his goal giving RIT a 13-7 lead. Warren drove to the net and scored with 13 minutes to play extending the lead to 14-7. Aquin and Warren scored late for RIT, making it a 16-7 final.
Aquin moves into tenth all time in program history in scoring with 176 career points, passing Craig Whipple (173 points). He moves into a tied for fifth all time with Marc Heagney with 142 career goals.
The Tigers improve to 26-14 all time versus Clarkson. RIT returns to action on Wednesday, March 24, versus Middlebury College on legendary Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.
