ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (2-2) women's lacrosse team fell to cross-town rival Nazareth College (4-0), 13-10 on a cold and blustery Wednesday afternoon on RIT's Turf Field.
Shots were 25-24 in favor of RIT. The Tigers grabbed 18 ground balls, to 24 for the Golden Flyers. RIT went 11-of-13 on clearing attempts, and were 3-of-5 on free position attempts.
Emily Livecchi (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) led RIT with four points on three goals and an assist.
Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) tallied three goals, while
Amanda Olsen (Glen Mills, PA/Archmere Academy) and
Sammy Ward (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) each had a goal and an assist.
Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) got the start in net and played the first half, making three saves.
Elizabeth Hughes (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) played the second half, making five saves.
Brooke Sullivan led Nazareth with seven points on four goals and three assists. Carly Gates, Leah Marvin and Haley DeVona each tallied two goals. Ashley Kirch picked up the win in net for the Golden Flyers, making 11 saves.
RIT jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Sarkis and Livecchi. Sarkis gave RIT a 1-0 on her unassisted goal at 24:32. Livecchi converted a free position attempt at 20:16 to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Flyers took control, scoring the next seven goals, taking a 7-2 lead into the half on free position goal from Sullivan with 13 seconds to play in the half. Sullivan tallied two of Nazareth's seven goals in the first half, while dishing out three assists.
RIT would out-score the Golden Flyers 8-6 in the second half, but could not complete the comeback.
Livecchi scored off an assist from Olsen 1:25 into the second half, cutting Nazareth's lead to 7-3. After a Kate Rothroch goal made it 8-3 Golden Flyers, Olsen scored on a nice drive, making it 8-4 Nazareth.
Consecutive goals from Sarkis and
Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) got RIT to within three goals at 9-6 with 17:55 to play in regulation. The Golden Flyers weathered the storm, not allowing the Tigers any closer. Livecchi and Maegen Schmauder tallied late goals for the Tigers, making it a 13-10 final.
Nazareth is 17-5 all time versus the Tigers, who return to action on Saturday, March 21 when RIT faces Western New England University at 10 a.m. in Orlando, Fla.
