No. 2 men's lacrosse comes back to beat No. 5 Cabrini on Kiesa's last-second goal

SYRACUSE, NY -- Senior Eddie Kiesa (Syracuse, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) scored with two seconds to play in regulation, as the No. 2 RIT (5-0) men's lacrosse team scored three goals in the final 1:42 to beat No. 5 Cabrini College (3-2), 12-11 at the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University on Saturday. The Tigers trailed by two with 3:23 to play, but scored three straight to increase their regular-season winning streak to 29 games.

Shots were 37-34 in favor of the Tigers, who scored on their only man-up chance. Cabrini held a slight 26-24 ground ball edge, while RIT was 14-of-14 on clearing attempts. Kiesa led RIT with four points on three goals and an assist, including the game-winner. Ryan Lee (Sharon, Ontario/The Hill Academy) added three goals, while Chad Levick (Newmarket, Ontario/The Hill Academy) and Kyle Sterzin (Fairport, NY/Fairport) each scored twice. Brad Gillies (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) had a goal and two assists, while Allister Warren (Toronto, Ontario/Malvern Collegiate Institute) finished with a goal and an assist. Evan Downey led Cabrini with five points on two goals and three assists. Damian Sobieski and Tyler Johnston each tallied three goals, while Tyler Morrell took the loss in net, making 10 saves.

RIT never led in the game until the final two seconds. The Tigers trailed 3-1 after the first quarter, and 7-5 at halftime. The Cavaliers took a 10-8 lead into the fourth quarter, and led by two goals with less than four minutes to play in the game.

"That was an amazing win," said RIT head coach Jake Coon. "Give Cabrini credit, they came out and took it to us. But we never hung our heads and kept working hard and found a way to win."

Sobieski and Johnston opened the scoring for Cabrini with goals eight seconds apart at 7:44 and 7:36 of the first quarter. Levick broke the drought for RIT with his unassisted goal at 2:15, making it 2-1 Cabrini. Leyden tallied with 14 seconds to play in the opening quarter, giving the Cavaliers a two-goal edge.

Sterzin opened the second-quarter scoring on his first of the game off a feed from Jake Quay (Latham, NY/Shaker), cutting the Cabrini lead to 3-2. But, Downey answered right back for RIT, scoring at 10:36 to make it 4-2 Cavaliers. After a Lee goal made it 4-3, Cabrini scored two straight, taking a 6-3 lead on Leyden's goal with 5:20 to play in the second quarter. Consecutive goals from Gillies and Kiesa, cut the Cabrini lead to 6-5 late in the half. Johnston scored with 1:37 giving Cabrini a 7-5 halftime lead.

Cabrini kept the momentum, tallying the first three goals of the third quarter, taking a 10-5 lead on Sobieski's goal with 5:29 to play. But the Tigers showed their mettle, closing out the third quarter with three straight goals, pulling to within 10-8 on Levick's goal with 1:13 to play. Warren and Sterzin also scored in the run for RIT.

Kiesa opened the fourth quarter scoring with his goal off a feed from Warren, making it 10-9 Cabrini. The Cavaliers tried holding the ball on offense for as long as possible, finally getting a goal from Johnston with 3:23 to play.

That set up a wild finish by RIT. Lee made 11-10 Cabrini with his goal off an assist from Kiesa with 1:42 to play. Then with 1:28 to play, Lee scored off a feed from Gillies tying the score at 11-11.

Kiesa then came from behind the net, swept around to the left and fired a shot passed Morrell with two seconds to play completing the comeback for the Tigers.

RIT returns to action on Wednesday, March 18 when the Tigers host St. John Fisher College at 4 p.m. on RIT's Turf Field.
