Women's lacrosse falls at Carrier Dome to No. 13 SUNY Geneseo

SYRACUSE, NY -- The RIT (1-1) women's lacrosse team played its first game at the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University Wednesday, falling to No. 13 SUNY Geneseo (1-0), 14-5.

Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) led RIT with two goals, while Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) tallied a goal and an assist. Sammy Ward (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) and Brooks Melnyk (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) each tallied a goal.
Shots were 31-14 in favor of Geneseo. The Tigers grabbed 23 ground balls to 28 for the Knights. RIT won 11-of-20 draws, and went 13-of-21 on clearing attempts. Senior goalie, Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) picked took the loss in net for the Tigers, making eight saves.

Tara Basile led Geneseo with eight points on five goals and three assists. Katey Hart and Erin Downey each tallied four points on three goals and an assist, while Lauren Corbett added a pair of markers. Laura Passamonte picked up the win in net for Geneseo, making three saves.

Geneseo jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than seven minutes into the first half on goals from Hart and Felix. Hart tallied off a feed from Down, while Felix's goal was an unassisted tally.

RIT answered back with two straight goals, tying the score at 2-2 on Mandell's fourth goal of the season and first of the afternoon. Sarkis got the Tigers on the board on her fifth goal of the season at 21:34 of the first half.

Geneseo rattled off six straight goals to close out the first half leading 8-2. Basile scored three of the Knights six goals in that stretch. Shots were 16-6 Geneseo in the first half.

Basile opened the second-half scoring with her third of the game at 25:51, making it 9-2. Sarkis broke the run with her second goal of the game off a free position attempt at 23:27 of the second half.

The Knights ran off four straight midway through the second half to put the game out of reach. Down scored two of the Knights four goals in that stretch.

Ward and Melnyk tallied late goals for the Tigers. For Melnyk, it was her first collegiate goal, coming off a feed from Mandell. Ward converted on a free position attempt.

Geneseo leads the all-time series between the two schools, 14-1.

The Tigers return to action on Friday, March 13 when the Tigers host SUNY Morrisville at 4 p.m. on RIT's Turf Field.
