Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Joe Venniro - Executive Director of Sports Information

Men's hockey puts up solid effort in road loss to No. 2 Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, MA – The RIT men's hockey team (3-7-2) scored the first two goals, but No. 2 Boston College (12-1-0) tallied six unanswered times to defeat the Tigers, 6-2 in front of 5,208 fans from Kelley Rink at Conte Forum on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles have now won 11 straight contests.

Abbott Girduckis (Belleville, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) and Erik Brown (Keene, Ontario/Kemptville 73's) scored goals 1:29 apart in the opening period to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. In goal, Mike Rotolo (Rochester, NY/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) made 30 saves.

Six different players scored for Boston College. Chris Brown had a goal and an assist, while Matthew Gaudreau recorded three helpers. Colin White and Zach Sanford added two assists apiece. Scott Savage, Ryan Fitzgerald, Alex Tuch, Ian McCoshen, and Casey Fitzgerald also scored for the Eagles, who now have 59 tallies in 13 games this season. Goaltender Thatcher Demko made 15 saves.

Boston College out-shot RIT, 36-17 and was 2-for-6 with the man-advantage. RIT was awarded just one power-play attempt and despite not scoring on it, fired five shots and had several great chances.

"We knew that Boston College would be a tough test and give full credit to them, they are very fast and skilled," said RIT head coach Wayne Wilson. "Overall, I was happy we got the lead and I thought our effort was pretty good. We like playing teams of this caliber to see what we can work on as we get back into league play."

RIT scored the first two goals of the game before Boston College came roaring back with three unanswered to take a 3-2 lead into the opening intermission.

The Eagles came out flying, but Rotolo made a handful of big saves to keep the game scoreless. Just 8:08 into the game, Girduckis hushed the Boston College faithful, taking a feed from Brady Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers) in the neutral zone and making an incredible individual effort, splitting a trio of Boston College defenders before beating Demko over the blocker for his second collegiate goal.

Just 1:29 later, Brown made it 2-0 over Boston College with his second collegiate goal, taking a feed from Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals) in the neutral zone, coming into the Eagles zone and ripping a shot that was deflected over the shoulder of Demko. Brad Shumway (Lafayette, CO/Chicago Steel) also earned an assist on the goal, tipping the pass out to Powell from inside his own zone.

Boston College answered 10 seconds later to make it 2-1, as Brown took a perfect feed from Myles Wood on a 2-on-1 off the ensuing faceoff.

At the 11:21 mark, Savage redirected a shot by Gaudreau past Rotolo for his second tally of the season, tying the game at 2-2. Boston College would take the lead with 4:07 left in the period, as Ryan Fitzgerald gobbled up a loose puck in the slot off a faceoff win in RIT's zone, hammering it past Rotolo for his ninth goal of the season.

Boston College would out-shoot RIT 14-3 in the second period and extend its lead to 5-2. Tuch would complete a tic-tac-toe passing play after a RIT turnover in its own zone 5:33 into the period to make it 4-2. At the 14:09 mark, McCoshen hammered a hard slap shot from the right point past Rotolo on the power-play to make it 5-2.

Caleb Cameron (Sundridge, Ontario/Listowel Cyclones) had a great chance to cut into the Eagles lead in the final minute while RIT was shorthanded, breaking in all alone, but his shot from the right circle was turned aside by the left pad of Demko.

In the third period, RIT buzzed on its lone power-play of the game, generating several chances, but Demko and the Boston College defense somehow kept the puck out. The goaltender's best save came on a breakaway by Alexander Kuqali (Pittsburgh, PA/Sioux City Musketeers). Kuqali tried to deke to the backhand, but could not get the puck over the sprawling goaltender.

The Eagles would conclude the scoring on a power-play with 3:51 left, as Casey Fitzgerald wired a shot through a screen.

RIT head coach Wayne Wilson and associate coach Brian Hills both played for Boston College head coach Jerry York at Bowling Green State University in the early 1980s, with Wilson serving as captain on the 1984 NCAA Division I National Championship squad.

York now has career 996 wins, four shy of becoming the first college hockey coach to record 1,000 victories.

"To be able to coach for so long and still have so much energy is remarkable," said Wilson, who played for York from 1980-1984 and coached along side him as an assistant at Bowling Green from 1989-1994.

Before today, Boston College has won both previous meetings between the two schools. On Dec. 30, 2007, Boston College defeated RIT, 6-0 in the championship game of Minnesota's Dodge Holiday Classic. Boston College also earned a 6-2 win over the Tigers in last year's Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend game from Blue Cross Arena on Oct. 17, 2014.

Tonight's game was the final non-conference regular season contest of the season. RIT plays the final 22 games of the season against league opponents.

RIT is back in action next weekend, as Atlantic Hockey foe Robert Morris University heads to the Gene Polisseni Center for a pair of games on Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5. Both games get underway at 7:05 p.m.

"We have to be ready to get back into conference play against a tough opponent," said Wilson. "We have four big games before the end of the calendar year to see where we are at."
