ROCHESTER, NY – In the first game back from the short Thanksgiving break, the RIT women's hockey team (4-13-0, 0-6-0 CHA) were unable to get a goal on the board, getting shutout by Princeton (6-4-1, 3-4-1 ECAC), 4-0 at the Gene Polisseni Center on Friday evening in a battle of Tigers.
Karlie Lund and Hilary Lloyd each had a goal and an assist for the visiting Tigers, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Kelsey Koelzer and Morgan Sly each added goals to complete the scoring. Molly Contini, Jaime McDonell, and Emily Achterkirch each tallied an assist on the night. Kimberly Newell stopped all 19 shots she faced in the victory.
Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic),
Taylor Thurston (Kanata, Ontario/All Saints Catholic), and
Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School) had three shots apiece to lead RIT, whose winless streak against Princeton increased to 11 games after the loss.
Brooke Stoddart (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale) was busy in net, making a season-high 42 saves.
"I thought we were looking for that extra pass, and misplaying some pucks around their goaltender," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach
Scott McDonald. "Princeton is a well coached, disciplined team, and we're just not playing smart right now, which is very disappointing from a coaches standpoint. Give credit to Princeton, they just kept coming and coming; they picked us apart all night."
RIT was called for five penalties, the first called halfway through the first period, as
Reagan Rust (Southaven, MS/Moon Area) was called for checking. Princeton took advantage late in the power play, as Lloyd found Lund as she skated to the doorstep of Stoddart, beating her off the left post and in for the opening goal.
RIT had a chance to respond a few minutes later on the power-play, as
Lindsay Stenason (Oakville, Ontario/Appleby Collegiate) fired a rocket from the slot, which Newell didn't see, but hit the post and bounced wide from the net, eventually being picked up by the Princeton defense.
Princeton doubled the score in the second, getting its second power play goal when Koelzer, getting the puck on a dump-off by RIT behind her own net, raced up the side past a few RIT defenders on the right side, and made a move inside from the circle, sneaking the puck high over Stoddart's shoulder to the left, just over 20 seconds into the penalty.
Princeton got their third goal just 49 seconds into the third period as Contini's pass was deflected but the puck found Sly just to the right of the goal, as she was able to fire it into the net. Princeton scored for final time just 10 minutes later when this time, Lund found Lloyd, who was just beyond the circle to the left of the net, the shot beating Stoddart low.
RIT nearly got on the board late in the contest, as Land deflected the puck, and had a breakaway opportunity. Land deked left, and attempted to go high and right, but Newell got her glove out to deflect the shot, and make the save to preserve the shutout.
The Tigers will play the finale of their series with Princeton at the Gene Polisseni Center tomorrow at 3 p.m.
