Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Nate Smith - Assistant Sports Information Director

Women's hockey falls to Princeton, 6-1 despite tally by captain Taylor Thurston

ROCHESTER, NY – Taylor Thurston (Kanata, Ontario/All Saints Catholic) notched her second goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as the RIT women's hockey team (4-14-0, 0-6-0 CHA) fell to Princeton (7-4-1, 3-4-1 ECAC), 6-1 at the Gene Polisseni Center on Saturday afternoon.

Thurston scored the lone goal in the third period for the host Tigers, who lost their third straight game. Kandice Sheriff (Brampton, Ontario) and Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School) assisted on Thurston's goal, getting their second and fifth assists on the season, respectively. Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) made 36 saves in the effort.

Molly Contini scored twice to lead Princeton, who have won back-to-back games after losing three straight. Hilary Lloyd and Kiersten Falck scored for the second straight night, with Kelsey Koeler and Jaimie McDonell adding a goal apiece. Alysia DaSilva stopped 19-of-20 shots in goal for the victory. Princeton was very effective on the power-play, converting on 3-of-6 opportunities.

"We came out slow for whatever reason, we dug ourselves a pretty quick hole with them scoring early in the game," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey coach Scott McDonald. "We had some glimpses of success in the second and third period, which are good, but we've got to play a complete game to compete."

Princeton jumped on the board quickly in the first period, 1:34 into the contest, as Falck, off a feed from Morgan Sly, found herself in front of the net, with only de Jonge to beat. She faked slightly to the right, then firing a low shot just past de Jonge between the legs. Five minutes later, as Princeton was on their first power play of the game, Contini found the rebound off a de Jonge save, tipping it in high.

Contini got her second goal of the game late in the second period after improved play by RIT, once again corralling a rebound, this time from the left side of the right faceoff circle.

With 11:03 into the third period, RIT narrowed the deficit to two, as Thurston, taking the feed from Sheriff from just inside the left faceoff circle, took a tough angle shot that beat DaSilva to her right. Inspired by the goal, the Tigers began to fire shots at the Princeton goalie, who was able to stem the tide before McDonell scored on the other end as she coralled the rebound to the right of de Jonge, getting the puck over her outstretched leg three minutes later for the game-winner. Lloyd and Koelzer added goals in the remaining five minutes, with Koezler's tally coming in the final second of the contest, to end the scoring.

The Tigers will return to CHA play, closing their long home stand with a weekend matchup against Lindenwood beginning on Friday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m., the first of a doubleheader featuring both the men's and women's teams.
