Women's hockey gives up late goal in 2-1 home loss to Brown

ROCHESTER, NY – Leah Olson scored the game-winning power-play goal with 3:02 left in regulation to lift Brown (2-7-0) to a 2-1 victory over the RIT women's hockey team (4-12-0) at the Gene Polisseni Center on Saturday afternoon.

Olson took a pass from Bridget Carey and fired a long shot that eluded everyone, including RIT goaltender Brooke Stoddart (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale), who was screened.

Olson and Maddie Woo tallied a goal and an assist for the Bears, who out-shot RIT, 26-23. Brown goaltender Julianne Landry was strong in net, especially in the third period, making 13 of her 22 saves during that span.

Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School) scored RIT's lone goal. Stoddart made 24 saves in the loss.

Brown was 2-for-6 on the power-play, while RIT finished 1-for-4.

"I don't doubt that we are working hard, but we have to work smarter," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach Scott McDonald. "That was definitely the defining aspect of the game today. We have to have all hands on deck to start getting some wins."

Despite being out-shot 8-6 and out-attempted 24-8 in the opening period, RIT held a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers got on the board just 4:54 into the game on the power-play, as Clayton stuffed home a loose puck at the side of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Reagan Rust (Southaven, MS/Moon Area) unleashed a rocket of a slap shot from the point that Landry stopped, but could not control the rebound. Kandice Sheriff (Brampton, Ontario) had a whack at the loose puck before Clayton jammed it in for the tally.

From there, Brown took control, territorially, but RIT's defense blocked four shots, led by Lauren Carroll (Carlisle, Ontario/Oakville Hornets), who had four of her own. Stoddart made a nice save on a deflection by Maddie Woo later in the frame to keep it 1-0 Tigers.

Brown would score the lone goal of the second period on the power-play with 4:10 left, as Woo fired a slap shot from the left point through a screen past Stoddart for her first goal of the season. Leah Olson assisted on the goal.

Sheriff had a great chance right as the buzzer sounded to end the period, but her hard shot was smothered by Landry.

Just a minute into the third period, Lindsay Stenason (Oakville, Ontario/Appleby Collegiate) had a golden opportunity in front, but was foiled by Landry. Landry then robbed Sheriff with a great glove save three minutes later. Sheriff had another brilliant chance midway through the period, but was stopped. Late in regulation, Landry made a big save on Clayton in front, who was bidding for her second goal of the game.

RIT is 9-7-1 all-time against Brown, including a 6-2-0 mark at the Division I level. Last night, Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic), Rust, and Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) combined for eight points, as the Tigers rolled to a 5-1 win. Stoddart made 12 saves, as RIT out-shot Brown, 36-13.

RIT continues its long home stand over Thanksgiving weekend, as No. 10 Princeton University comes to Gene Polisseni Center in a battle of Tigers. The game on Friday, Nov. 27 starts at 7 p.m., while Saturday's contest begins at 3 p.m.
