ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (4-11-0) snapped a seven-game losing streak by erupting for a season-high five goals in a 5-1 victory over visiting Brown University (1-7-0) at the Gene Polisseni Center on Friday evening.
Logan Land (Turkey Point, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic) scored a pair of goals and added an assist, while
Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) tallied twice as well.
Reagan Rust (Southaven, MS/Moon Area) scored a goal and added assist, while
Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School) and
Taylor Thurston (Kanata, Ontario/All Saints Catholic) recorded a pair of assists apiece.
In goal,
Brooke Stoddart (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale) picked up her third win of the season, stopping 12 shots.
Leah Olson scored her first collegiate goal for Brown. Goaltender Monica Elvin took the loss, stopping 31 shots.
RIT out-shot Brown, 36-13, firing at least 10 shots in all three periods. RIT was 2-for-5 on the power-play, while Brown was 1-for-4.
"I thought we played really well tonight, night and day from Wednesday (against Syracuse) in regards to effort," said Bruce B. Bates Women's Hockey Coach
Scott McDonald. "We did the little things, won loose puck battles, and that was the difference tonight."
After a slow start, RIT took over in the opening period, out-shooting the Bears and scoring the lone goal.
Land got the Tigers on the board with her second goal of the season 7:19 into the contest.
Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School) won a face-off cleanly to
Lauren Carroll (Carlisle, Ontario/Oakville Hornets), who fired a pass across to defensive mate
Brinna Dochniak (Marine on St. Croix, MN/Stillwater). Dochinak found Land at the right wing boards, and Land did the rest, cutting to the middle and whistling a hard wrist shot past Elvin to the far side for the goal.
From there, RIT kept coming in the period and had several good chances to make it 2-0.
Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) whistled a shot that Elvin stopped on the power-play. Payerl then threaded a pass to the goal mouth on that same power-play that Clayton just missed stuffing into the open side. Right before the period ended, Elvin had to make a big pad save on
Darcy Henderson (Burlington, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas) from in close.
RIT turned up the pressure even more in the second period, tallying twice to take a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Elvin had to make two big saves early in the period, first on
Kandice Sheriff (Brampton, Ontario) on a 2-on-1 from the doorstep and then on
Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers), who came in on a breakaway and tried to go high, but was denied.
Land would get her second goal of the game and third of the season on the power-play with 12:29 left in the period on the power-play, taking a feed from Payerl at the left face-off circle and blasting a shot just under the crossbar and in to make it 2-0 Tigers.
Taylor Thurston (Kanata, Ontario/All Saints Catholic) also assisted on the goal.
Stoddart who was not tested often, had to come up with her best save of the night with seven minutes left in the period, robbing Cara Najjar with a big right pad save on a backhander from the slot.
Payerl would take a goal mouth feed from Paton with 1:17 left in the period and stuff it into the open side for her team-leading fifth goal of the year to give RIT a commanding 3-0 lead.
Reagan Rust (Southaven, MS/Moon Area) started the play with some nifty footwork to get out of her own zone and send the puck up ice. Payerl carried the puck into the corner before giving way to Paton. Paton circled around the net and found her teammate wide open for the tally.
Just 1:09 into the third period, Rust fired a hard shot through traffic on the power-play for her fourth goal of the season to give RIT a commanding 4-0 lead. Land dug the puck out to Clayton, who made the pass back to Rust at the point. Rust was able to step into her shot and put it past Elvin.
Just over five minutes later, Olson broke up the RIT shutout bid on the power-play, walking around a RIT defender in the high slot and firing a hard shot past Stoddart for her first collegiate goal.
Payerl would close out the scoring with 11:56 left, taking a feed from Rust down low and roofing a shot over Elvin for her second goal of the game and sixth of the year to make it 5-1 Tigers.
RIT is 9-6-1 all-time against Brown, including a 6-1-0 mark at the Division I level. Last year, the Tigers swept a two-game series at Brown by scores of 4-1 and 5-2.
RIT and Brown wrap up the regular season series on Saturday from the Polisseni Center at 3 p.m.
