Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Steve Jaynes - Sports Information Director

Men's soccer beats No. 7 Rensselaer on Sicoli penalty kick in overtime

TROY, NY – Senior captain Luke Dorsey (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) was hauled down inside the Rensselaer penalty box in the 96th minute. Freshman Gene Sicoli (Commack, NY/Commack) knocked in the penalty kick to give the RIT (4-6-0, 1-2-0 Liberty League) men's soccer team a 1-0 win over No. & Rensselaer in Liberty League action from East Campus Stadium on Saturday evening.

"Our four captains were instrumental in leading our team to a big Liberty League road result," said RIT head coach Bill Garno. "We battled and we were disciplined defensively."

Shots were 18-12 in favor of the Tigers. Rensselaer took six corner kicks to just one for the Tigers. Peter Cinibulk (Bellbrook, OH/Bellbrook) got the start in net for the Tigers, making three saves and picking up the win. Ryan Nealon took the loss in net for Rensselaer, making seven saves.

After a scoreless first half, RIT generated some good scoring chances in the second half. RPI's Paul Lentine was sent off with a red card in the 73rd minute. In the 78th minute Rueben Marquez (Williamson, NY/Williamson) had two shots from inside the RPI penalty area. A defender blocked his first shot from 15 yards out. The rebound fell right at his feet, but his volley sailed over the cross bar.

Sicoli had a shot from 15 yards out in the 84th minute that Nealon saved. With time running out in regulation, Dean Kouroupas (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) had two good looks at goal. He had a free shot from 15 yards out that Nealon was able to stop. Then, in the 90th minute Kouroupas fired a header just over the cross bar, sending the game to overtime.

Neither team generated much in the way of scoring chances to open the first overtime. In the 96th minute Dorsey got around his defender and was tripped up inside the box forcing the referee to award the penalty kick to the Tigers.

Sicoli stepped up and drilled a shot into the back of the net, fooling Nealon into going the other direction. It is his team-leading sixth goal of the season and his second conversion of a penalty kick this season.

"I thought our energy level was fantastic today despite having less than 24 hours to revoer from Friday's match," said Garno. "RPI is a very good team deserving of their top-10 ranking, but our energy level was fantstic despite having less than 24 hours to recorver from Friday's match."

RIT returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 7 when the Tigers face SUNY Geneseo at 7 p.m. in Geneseo, N.Y.
