ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT women's hockey team heads back on the road to face College Hockey America rival Mercyhurst University in a pair of league games this weekend. Friday's game from the Mercyhurst Ice Center starts at 6 p.m., while Saturday's game begins at 1 p.m.
RIT enters the weekend with a 3-4-0 record, 0-1-0 in CHA play. Last time out, the Tigers earned a weekend sweep on the road at Union, winning by scores of 3-1 and 2-1. In Friday's win,
Caitlin Wallace (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate),
Kendall Cornine (Kinnelon, NJ/Morristown Beard), and
Carly Payerl (Kitchener, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) scored, while
Jenna de Jonge (Abbotsford, British Columbia/George Elliot) picked up her first collegiate win in goal, stopping 20 shots. On Saturday, Cornine and
Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers) scored, while
Brooke Stoddart (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale) made 22 saves in the win.
Cornine, Payerl, and
Taylor Thurston (Kanata, Ontario/All Saints Catholic) are tied for the team lead with five points apiece. Cornine, Payerl,
Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School), and
Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers) have two goals apiece to lead the squad, while Thurston has a team-best five assists. In goal, Stoddart is 2-1-0 with a 3.36 goals against average and an .883 save percentage.
Mercyhurst enters the weekend series with a 0-5-1 record. Last weekend, the Lakers lost a pair of home games to Princeton by scores of 3-2 and 2-1. Rachel Smith leads the squad in scoring with six points on two goals and four assists. Emily Janiga has a team-leading four goals. The Lakers are being out-scored 22-14 this season. Mercyhurst has used three different goaltenders. Jessica Convery has a 2.64 goals against average and an .882 save percentage to lead the way.
The Lakers are 412-122-38 since becoming a Division I program in 1999. Mercyhurst had its streak of making 10 straight NCAA Tournament appearances snapped last season and are 173-17-12 all-time in CHA regular season play.
Mercyhurst leads the all-time series between the two schools, 11-3. The Tigers knocked Mercyhurst from the postseason last year in the CHA Semifinal.
