ROCHESTER, NY – Despite the first sellout crowd of 4,300 fans in Gene Polisseni Center history, the RIT men's hockey team (0-4-1) dropped a heartbreaker to visiting Colgate University (3-2-0), 4-3 on Saturday night. Colgate's Darcy Murphy broke the tie with 1:28 left in regulation.
Tied 3-3, Colgate withstood pressure by RIT and came up the ice on a 3-on-3. Mike Borkowski took a hit and fed a pass to Mike Panowyk. Panowyk found Murray streaking up the slot and the Colgate winger fired a shot that was deflected up into the air by a Tiger defender. Unfortunately, the puck bounced over RIT goaltender
Mike Rotolo (Rochester, NY/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) off the crossbar, down and in for the goal.
RIT pressured with Rotolo pulled, but could not get the tying goal. They had a handful of chances in the final minute, but goaltender Charlie Finn and the Colgate defense prevented the tying goal.
"I thought we played much better tonight (than last night), but didn't get the result we wanted," said RIT head coach
Wayne Wilson. "We have to do a better job late in the game, but I thought some guys really stepped up tonight and If we play like this down the line, we will get our share of wins."
The Tigers never led, but came back to tie Colgate three times, including twice in the third period. RIT fired a season-best 46 shots, out-shooting the Raiders, 46-27.
Alex Perron-Fontaine (St. Mathieu de Beloeil, Quebec/Chilliwack Chiefs),
Greg Amlong (O'Fallon, MO/UMass Lowell), and
Myles Powell (Courtenay, British Columbia/Cowichan Valley Capitals) scored for RIT, while
Mark Golberg (Ottawa, Ontario/Cumberland Grads) had two assists.
Mark Logan (Calgary, Alberta/Brooks Bandits ) tallied his first collegiate point, an assist on Perron-Fontaine's second period goal. Goaltender
Mike Rotolo (Rochester, NY/Cedar Rapids Roughriders) made 23 stops.
Murphy and Borkowsky had a goal and an assist apiece, while Panowyk added three assists. Tim Harrison and Brett Corkey also scored for the Raiders. In goal, Charlie Finn made 43 saves, several in high pressure situations.
Tonight's game was the first sellout in Gene Polisseni Center history, which opened in 2014. RIT President Bill Destler laid out a challenge to the RIT community to sell this game out and since they did, he dyed his hair orange between the second and third periods.
"Tonight's game was a great atmosphere and I'm proud of our president for what he did for us tonight," said Wilson.
Neither team scored in a frenetic first period of play in which RIT gained the momentum after the halfway point, out-shooting the Raiders, 17-7.
Colgate had a great chance midway through, as a shot from Kevin Lough beat Rotolo from the high slot but rang off the crossbar and out.
RIT had 45 seconds of a two-man advantage and just over three minutes of power-play time and peppered the Colgate net with nine shots on goal, but Finn was a brick wall, keeping everything out. The Tigers fired from all angles and thought they had Finn beat on a shot from
Brady Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers), but that shot hit the left post and came out.
Chase Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers) fired a wicked slap shot that Finn stopped, with the rebound coming to
Erik Brown (Keene, Ontario/Kemptville 73's), who was robbed by Finn.
Colgate would open the scoring 8:43 into the second period, as Harrison would take a feed from Kevin Lough in the neutral zone, walk around a RIT defender and have his first shot stopped by Rotolo. Harrison would follow right up and chip the rebound over a sprawling Rotolo for his first goal of the season.
Perron-Fontaine would tie the game 2:23 later, taking a feed from
Mark Golberg (Ottawa, Ontario/Cumberland Grads) off a scramble in front, and ripping a shot past a sprawled Finn for the goal. Golberg came into the zone on a 2-on-1 with
Mark Logan (Calgary, Alberta/Brooks Bandits ) and fired a shot that Finn stopped. The rebound came to Logan, who swept the puck behind the net to Golberg. With Colgate out of position, he calmly fed a pass to Perron-Fontaine, who was all alone in the slot.
Colgate would regain the lead with 6:49 left in the period, as Corkey would convert his own rebound after Rotolo made a tremendous save on a 2-on-1.
Amlong made it 2-2 just 1:02 into the third period, taking a drop pass from
Gabe Valenzuela (Brampton, Ontario/North York Rangers) on the rush and ripping a slap shot past Finn to the far side for his second goal in as many games.
Colgate would regain the lead with 8:10 left in regulation, as Borkowski walked out from the corner off a face-off and roofed a backhander from in close just under the crossbar and past Rotolo for his fifth goal of the season.
RIT kept coming and would not quit, tying the game at 3-3 with 4:09 left, as Powell was the recipient of a great passing play for his first of the season.
Caleb Cameron (Sundridge, Ontario/Listowel Cyclones) flipped the puck in on a rush, skipping it over a Colgate player, right to Golberg, creating an odd-man rush. Golberg made a nice fake and fed Powell, who one-timed the pass past a sliding Finn.
Last night, Colgate defeated RIT at Starr Rink by a score of 5-2. Valenzuela and Amlong scored their first goals in a Tiger uniform, while
Christian Short (Vaughan, Ontario/Surrey Eagles) made his collegiate debut in net, stopping 24 shots.
Tonight marked the first home game of the 2015-16 at the Gene Polisseni Center for RIT. Last season, RIT went 10-5-3 at the new arena, winning its final five games.
The Tigers open up league play next weekend on the road at American International College for a pair of games on Friday, Oct. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 31. Both contests start at 7:05 p.m.
