ROCHESTER, NY – Senior
Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) scored in the 98th minute to give the RIT (11-2-2, 5-0-1 Liberty League) women's soccer team a 2-1 win over Vassar College on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers have won two straight games and three out of their last four. The win clinches a postseason berth for the Tigers.
Shots were 18-8 in favor of the Brewers, who fired eight shots on net, to four for the Tigers. RIT took two corner kicks to four for Vassar.
Sienna Fisher (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg Area) got the start in net, playing the first 45 minutes and making two saves.
Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) played the second half and overtime, picking up the win and making five saves. Emma Nichols took the loss in net for Vassar, making two saves.
RIT took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute on a goal from
Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna). She took a pass from
Monique Polanco (Merrick, NY/John F. Kennedy) and fired a shot into the net for her sixth of the season and gave the Tigers the early lead.
After the RIT goal, Vassar began to generate offensive pressure in the second half. The Brewers were finally rewarded in the 71st minute, when Rebecca Andrews found some space down the right wing. The forward got around a defender and launched a shot from deep, putting her attempt over Rogers' head and into the left corner.
With the game tied 1-1, the Brewers pressure continued to create chances down the stretch, forcing three saves in the final five minutes of regulation by Rogers. Neither team could not produce the elusive game-winner, and the teams headed into overtime knotted at one.
RIT needed only one shot in extra time to get the golden goal, after a cross into the box found the feet of May in the 18-yard box. She touched around a Vassar defender, and buried the open shot to give the Tigers the win.
RIT returns to action on Saturday, October 24 when the Tigers face Union College at 2 p.m. in Schenectady, N.Y.
