ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY – Three first half goals were more than enough for the RIT women's soccer team as the Tigers (10-2-2, 4-0-1 Liberty League) cruised to a 3-1 victory against Bard (5-6-1, 1-4 Liberty League) in a Liberty League conference matchup on Friday afternoon. With the win, RIT moves closer to clinching a Liberty League postseason berth.
Maxine Culhane (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville),
Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland), and
Hayley Cromwell (Cave Creek, AZ/Pinnacle) all scored goals for the Tigers.
Sienna Fisher (Lewisburg, PA/Lewisburg Area) stopped a pair of shots in the first half to earn the decision.
Kelly Rogers (Ardmore, PA/Haverford) stopped a header attempt in the closing minutes of the game for her only save of the afternoon, preserving the victory.
Isabel Keddy-Hector scored the lone goal for the Raptors, a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Bard led in the shot count, 16-11, as they tried to mount a comeback in the second half.
The victory marks the fifth straight win for the Tigers over the Raptors in Liberty League play, since both teams moved to the conference in 2011.
RIT controlled the pace of the game early and often, striking quickly in the seventh minute, as
Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) fed Culhane in the box, who fired it to the far side of the goal for her third of the season. Fed by the momentum of the first goal, the Tigers struck again nearly eight minutes later, when May opportunistically stole the ball from the Bard keeper when attempting to corral the ball, and fired a shot into the open net for her fifth goal of the season.
The Tigers struck for a third time in the 40th minute thanks to a wide pass across the goal by
Lauren Chester (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia), who was able to feed it to Cromwell, who only needed one touch to flick the ball into net for her second goal of the year.
In the second half, Bard was more aggressive, as they tried to rally back. The Raptors got one in the 70th minute, as they were able to draw a foul deep into the box, forcing a penalty kick that Keddy-Hector sank calmly past Rogers for the goal.
The Tigers will continue their road swing as they take on Vassar (7-4-2, 1-1-2 Liberty League) in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
