Tellgren sets pool record in 1-meter diving event

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (5-4) men's swimming and diving team suffered a 172-127 loss to the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon in Liberty League action from the Robert B. Goergen Athletic Center. Senior diver John Tellgren (Anoka, MN/Anoka) broke his own pool record in the 1-meter diving event.
 
Tellgren won the 1-meter event with a 6-dive total of 350.7. That broke his old mark of 344.32, and he also took home a second place finish in the 3-meter event, garnering 13 points for the Tigers on Saturday. Matt DePalo (Franklin, MA/Xaverian Brothers) took home first place in the 3-meter diving event, posting a score of 345.98.
 
Matthew Butler (Buffalo, NY/Kenmore East) picked up a pair of wins, the first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 59.87, while the second came in the 200-yard breaststroke where he won in a time of 2:18.29.
 
Other top finishers included second places from Austin Hayes (Aurora, OH/Aurora) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:36.27), Matt Berus (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville North) was second in the 200-yd. freestyle (1:50.42) and Justin Morris (Holliston, MA/Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School) was second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:33.14). Sam Shpuntoff took home a pair of second place finishes, in the 100-yard. freestyle (49.45), and the 500-yard freestlye (5:06.23).
 
In relay action, the team of Steven Paine (York, PA/Dallastown Area), Butler, Morris and Derek Brown (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood) placed third in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing in a time of 1:35.40. In the final event of the afternoon, the team of Ryan Facchine (Fairview, PA/Fairview), Butler, Paine and Brown placed second in the 200-v freestyle relay, finishing in a time of 1:29.18.
 
The Tigers will will close out the regular season on Saturday, Jan. 31 when RIT travels to face Nazareth College at 1 p.m. .
