ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's basketball team (9-6, 4-3 Liberty League) used a balanced attack to upend visiting Vassar College (5-9, 1-4 Liberty League) at Clark Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon for its second straight victory.
Four Tigers scored in double figures and the team shot 51.1 percent from the field (24-for-47).
JP Reagan (Cortland, NY/Cortland) led RIT with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor. He scored 11 of his 18 points in the second half. Reagan also added seven boards, a career-high five steals, and three assists.
Joe Stortini (Red Hook, NY/Loomis Chaffee) was 3-for-3 from long range and hit seven free throws en route to a 16-point effort.
AJ Horde (Oak Park, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) scored 10 points and added six assists and three steals.
Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) scored 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and
Miguel Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) added eight points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor.
"It was a real good weekend for us, not only because we won both games, but also because it is good to see the team developing, especially the young players," said RIT head coach
Bob McVean. "We are making better decisions and playing 40 strong minutes on both sides of the ball. Our defense was really good today."
Jesse Browne led Vassar with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor, including 4-for-6 from the 3-point line. Alex Snyder added 13 points, seven boards, and four assists.
The Tigers made their first five field goals and jumped up to a 10-2 lead over the first four minutes accentuated with steals and thunderous dunks from Reagan and Davis. Vassar would get back into the game and take its first lead of the game on a jumper from Tony Caletti with 6:32 left in the half. Late in the half Stortini would score five straight points including a 3-pointer on a perfect kick and slash feed from Horde at the buzzer, giving RIT a 34-27 edge.
The Tigers would pull away early in the second half, opening on an 11-2 run, as
Casey Bobelis (Bradenton, FL/Braden River) would give RIT a 45-29 lead on a free throw with 12:53 left in regulation. Vassar would chip away and cut the RIT lead to 65-59 with 1:51 left. A technical foul on the Vassar bench after a foul call 19 seconds later gave RIT four straight free throws and Stortini and
Sheldon Clay (Detroit, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) nailed all four to give RIT a 10-point lead to put the game away.
RIT was 20-for-28 from the foul line, while Vassar won the rebound battle 29-26. RIT scored 19 points off 17 Vassar turnovers. The Tigers had 13 steals in the win.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, with a road contest at league foe Union that gets underway at 8 p.m.
