Women's soccer opens Liberty League play with 1-0 loss to Clarkson

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (4-2-3, 0-1-0 Liberty League) women's soccer team opened Liberty League play with a 1-0 loss to Clarkson University (4-5-0, 1-0-0 Liberty League) on a warm, sunny, Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. It was the first win for the Golden Knights over RIT since 2007, breaking a streak of six straight victories in the all-time series for the Tigers.

Nikki Carfi tallied the game-winning goal in the 80th minute off an assist from Abby Gruneisen. Gruneisen sent a service into the RIT penalty area off a counter-attack by the Golden Knights. Carfi ran onto the service and scored for the first time into the open net.

Shots were 13-4 in favor of RIT, who took six corner kicks to none for Clarkson. Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) took the loss in net for RIT, while Kim Kenlin picked up the win for Clarkson, making seven saves.

RIT had a couple good chances in the first half. Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) sent a ball out to Maxine Culhane (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) out on the flank. Culhane cut in and fired a shot that Kenline was able to save.

The Tigers had another chance late in the first half off a corner kick. May sent the ball into the Clarkson penalty area that came to Alyssa Tatti (Lake Grove, NY/Centereach). Tatti gathered and fired a shot that was headed for the net, but Courtney Black saved the ball off the line for the Golden Knights, keeping the game scoreless.

Culhane had another chance early in the second half when her header off a service from Sarah Szczepanski (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili) in the 57th minute.

RIT returns to action on Friday, Oct. 3 when they host Vassar College in Liberty League action from Tiger Stadium beginning at 4 p.m.
