Women's soccer plays to a 1-1 tie versus Vassar in Liberty League action

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (4-2-4, 0-1-1 Liberty League) women's soccer team tied Vassar College (5-2-2, 0-0-2 Liberty League) 1-1 in Liberty League action from Tiger Stadium Friday afternoon. With the tie, RIT is 3-3-2 all time versus the Brewers.

Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) scored for RIT, while Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) added an assist. Chloe Wheeler tallied for Vassar, and Amanda McFarland added an assist.

Shots were 10-8 in favor of RIT, who fired seven corner kicks to just one for the Brewers. Emma Nichols made three saves in a tie for Vassar, while Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) made two stops for RIT.

Vassar struck first in the 26th minute in Wheeler's fifth goal of the season. McFarland sent a service in from the right flank that Wheeler ran onto and one-timed past a diving Murray for a 1-0 Brewers lead.

That score stood until the 48th minute when Kiss tallied her team leading fourth goal of the season. Ornellas flicked a pass over to Kiss inside the Vassar penalty box. Kiss tucked her shot inside the near post, tying the game at 1-1.

Wheeler had a great chance in the following minute when she got free inside the RIT box, but Emily Shoemaker (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) came over from her defensive position and blocked Wheeler's shot out of harm's way.

RIT had two golden chances down the stretch. The first came when Kiss streaked down the field, beating two Vassar defenders. She centered a pass to a wide-open Ornellas who fired her one-timer over the cross bar and out of play.

In the 68th minute, Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) had a chance when she found herself in front of the Vassar net. She fired a shot, but right at Nichols who made the save, preserving the tie.

RIT applied decent pressure in the two overtimes, but could not break through the Brewers defense.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 4 when the Tigers host Bard College at 2 p.m.
