Women's soccer rallies with two second half goals to beat No. 20 Nazareth, 2-1

ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (4-1-3) women's soccer team tallied two second-half goals en route to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over No. 20 Nazareth College (6-2-0) Wednesday afternoon from sunny Tiger Stadium. Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) and Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) each scored for RIT, who has defeated Golden Flyers including in each of the last two seasons.

"I am proud of our team for coming back from a goal down," said RIT head coach Liz Masterson. "We played with much more purpose in the second half, and we were finally able to do more of what we wanted with the ball."

Shots were 13-12 in favor of the Tigers, while RIT took five corner kicks to four for the Golden Flyers. Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) picked up the win in net for RIT, making five saves. Allison Dobles took the loss for Nazareth with four saves.

RIT had the momentum early in the first half with chances from Kiss and Ornellas that went just wide of the Nazareth net.

Nazareth had a really good scoring chance in the 16th minute. Briana Vibbard took a through-ball from Kaitlyn Sowyrda and fired a shot that looked to be headed for the top of the net, but Murray timed her leap perfectly, tipping the shot over the crossbar and out of harms way.

The Golden Flyers broke through in the 41st minute when Tori Ryan scored off a feed from Michaela Soules. Soules played a nice ball that freed Ryan up and she tucked a shot past Murray and into the left corner for a 1-0 Nazareth lead.

That scored stood until the 51st minute when Kiss took advantage of a Nazareth defensive miscue. Jessica Barden tried playing a ball square to her fellow defender, but Kiss intercepted the pass and broke in one-on-one with Dobles. She took a dribble and fired a low shot past the goalkeeper, tying the game at 1-1.

A little over seven minutes later, RIT took the lead on Ornellas' second goal of the season off a corner kick from Sarah Szczepanski (Rochester, NY/Gates-Chili). Szczepanski slung an in-swinger into the Nazareth penalty area that Ornellas leapt and headed into the net for the go-ahead score.

Elizabeth Howell had a chance for Nazareth inside the RIT box, but her shot went wide of the net. Vibbard had a great chance to tie the score with a little over eight minutes to play off a loose ball. From eight yards she fired a shot over the crossbar and out of play.

Nazareth came into the game averaging 2.57 goals per game, but RIT's defense held the Golden Flyers to just one goal. RIT is now 10-23-5 all-time against Nazareth.

RIT returns to action on Saturday Sept. 27 when the Tigers open up Liberty League play with a home match against Clarkson University at 3 p.m. at Tigers Stadium.
