ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (1-5-1) men's soccer team fell 3-2 to No. 20 University of Rochester in the third annual Hillside Community Shield at Sahlen's Stadium in downtown Rochester on Saturday evening. The Community Shield is a fundraiser aimed at supporting the youth and families served by Hillside Family of Agencies and Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Shots were 10-8 in favor of the Yellowjackets, while RIT took two corner kicks to nine for Rochester.
Mark Reeves (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) took the loss in net for RIT, making two saves. Michael Shatkin picked up the win for the Yellowjackets with four saves.
Rochester led 2-1 at halftime on goals from Ben Keeton and Jack Thesing. Keeton converted a penalty kick in the seventh minute, while Thesing tallied in the 15th minute off a feed from Jeffrey Fafinski.
Matt Miles (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) pulled RIT to within 2-1 on his first collegiate goal in the 39th minute. He fired a shot from 25 yards out that caught Shatkin off his line, scoring into the top right corner.
After halftime, RIT kept the pressure on the Yellowjackets defense when Miles got a head on the ball from six yards out. This time Shatkin was able to make the save.
The Tigers offense fed off the momentum and tallied the equalizer in the 65th minute when
Dakota Kegler (Pavilion, NY/Pavilion) fired a shot from distance that deflected off a Rochester defender and beat Shatkin into the top corner, tying the game at 2-2. The play started with
Danny Bloshkin (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) who had a chance inside the Rochester box. His shot was saved but the ball was loose and came out to Kegler who fired the blast.
Bloshkin had another good scoring chance with 15 minutes to play in regulation when he fired a shot off a rebound inside the Yellowjackets box that Shatkin was able to save.
In the 76th minute, Rochester's Nick Pastore split two RIT defenders on the left flank and got himself free for a shot which he rifled into the top right corner passed a diving Reeves to give the Yellowjackets a 3-2 lead.
The Tigers tried mounting one more push to tie, but fell a little short.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 23 when they host Nazareth College at 4 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
