ROCHESTER, NY -- The Hillside Family of Agencies along with Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield have once again teamed up with RIT men's soccer team and the University of Rochester to put on the third annual
Hillside Community Shield, a fundraiser aimed at supporting the youth and families served by Hillside through the game of soccer. This year's game will take place on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Sahlen's Stadium in downtown Rochester at 7 p.m.
The Tigers come into the game with a 1-4-1 record after a 1-0 win at Elmira College on Tuesday. Rochester is 3-1-2 on the season after a 0-0 draw at No. 3 SUNY Oneonta on Tuesday.
Last year, RIT and Rochester played to a 1-1 draw.
Danny Bloshkin (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) scored for the Tigers in the 46th minute, while Max Fan tallied the equalizer for the Yellowjackets in the 86th minute. Rochester won the inaugural Hillside Community Shield 1-0 in 2012.
This season, RIT is proud to have former soccer greats Kevin McCarthy and Grant Perry serve as honorary captains. Both were stalwarts for the Tigers back in the mid 80's.
From 1981-84, McCarthy helped lead RIT to three NCAA Tournament appearances posting a 55-15-5 record in that span. A two-year captain, McCarthy tallied 45 points in 1984 on 20 goals and five assists, third most in a season. The Tigers finished the year with a 19-1-1 mark and advanced to National Semifinals. He was named the 1984-85 RIT Senior Male Athlete of the Year, and was a four-time all-conference selection. McCarthy, a 1996 inductee into the RIT Athletics Hall of Fame, ended his career with 85 points on 35 goals and 15 assists, which is fifth best in Tiger history.
Perry is considered one of the best defenders to come through the RIT soccer program. He was a First Team All-American selection in 1989 and a three-time All-New York State First Team Selection from 1987-89. Perry finished his career with 41 points on 15 goals and 11 assists, which is 21st all-time at RIT. He helped the Tigers to a 61-8-4 record in his career, and led RIT to four consecutive NCAA Appearances, serving as captain for the 1989 team that made it to the NCAA Semifinals. He played a key role in RIT's National Championship-runner up finish in 1988. Perry was RIT's Senior Co-Male Athlete of the Year in 1990, and was inducted into the RIT Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.
