RIT men's soccer picks up first win of the season, 1-0 at Elmira



ELMIRA, NY – The RIT (1-4-1) men's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2014 season with a 1-0 victory on the road at Elmira College Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Dan Tomaszewski (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) scored his first collegiate goal and the Tigers defense held Elmira to just two shots on net to earn the win.

Shots were 20-8 in favor of the Tigers. RIT held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks and fired nine shots on net. Mark Reeves (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) picked up his first win of the season in net for RIT, while John Dougherty took the loss for the Soaring Eagles making eight saves.

RIT dominated much of the play in the first half, firing eight total shots, including four on net. The Tigers finally broke through in the 39th minute on a goal by Tomaszewski. An attempted clearance hit off an Elmira defender and came right tot Tomaszewski who fired into the low left corner for his first collegiate goal.

Four different Tigers fired shots on goal for RIT in the first half. Reeves did not have to make a save in the first half, as the Tigers' defense held the Soaring Eagles to zero shots on goal.

Geno Rocco (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) had a good chance for RIT early in the second half with a shot from 18 yards out that Dougherty was able to gobble up.

Dean Kouroupas (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) and Dave Boselli (Chadds Ford, PA/Garnet Valley) each had good chances inside the Elmira box in the 58th and 59th minutes respectively, but Jordan was able to make the saves for the Soaring Eagles keeping it a one-goal game.

The Tigers fired 11 shots in the second half, including five on net. It is the first clean sheet of the season for the Tigers. RIT is now 10-3-2 all-time against Elmira.

RIT returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 20 when the Tigers face cross-town rival University of Rochester in the third annual Hillside Community Shield at 7:30 p.m. at Sahlen's Stadium in downtown Rochester.
