ROCHESTER, NY -– The RIT (0-4-1) men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker, losing to SUNY Cortland (3-2-0) 1-0 in double overtime on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. Robby Reiser scored for the Red Dragons in the 104th minute to give Cortland the win.
Shots were 17-8 in favor of the Cortland. The Red Dragons took eight corner kicks to three for RIT.
Mark Reeves (Macedon, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) took the loss for the Tigers making seven saves, while Tim Beauvais picked up the win for Cortland making four saves.
RIT generated three good scoring chances in the first half. The first came five minutes into the contest when
Dave Boselli (Chadds Ford, PA/Garnet Valley) fired a shot from 18 yards out that Beauvais was able to stop.
In the 33rd minute Alex Burns played a ball back to
Dean Kouroupas (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) inside the Cortland penalty area. Kouroupus fired a shot that looked to give the Tigers a lead, but Beauvais made the spectacular diving save, keeping the game scoreless.
Brian Kane (Coudersport, PA/Coudersport) had a chance for the Tigers late in the first half when he fired a shot from 30 yards out off a free kick that just missed the top left corner.
Cortland's best chance came with a little over nine minutes to play in the first half when Thomas Nocito fired a shot off a loose ball inside the RIT box that Reeves was able to save and keep the game scoreless at the break.
Chris McBride had the first really good scoring chance in the second half when he sent a shot in from 18 yards out. Reeves made the spectacular save, diving full extension to tip the ball wide before it hit the top left corner. Reeves made another great save when Daniel Friend had a shot from point blank range that he turned aside keeping the game scoreless in the 68th minute.
In the first overtime period, the Tigers had a great build-up.
Zach Rahim (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) played a nifty flick to
Mike Reverdatto (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem) who centered a ball that
Geno Rocco (Apalachin, NY/Vestal) shot from close range, but Beauvais came up with another fabulous save.
Moments later, Ole Toepfer sent a ball across the RIT penalty box that Reiser ran onto and fired first time into the open net giving the Red Dragons the win.The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, September 16 when RIT faces Elmira College at 4 p.m. in Elmira, N.Y.
