ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman
Courtney Hunt (Brockport, NY/Brockport) tallied her first collegiate goal in the 105th minute, giving the RIT (3-1-1) women's soccer team a 1-0 win over cross-town rival St. John Fisher College (1-4-1) in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon from Tiger Stadium. Hunt scored on a rocket from 25 yards out, finding the top left corner of the goal.
Shots were 19-7 in favor of RIT who took 12 corner kicks to five for the Cardinals. Senior
Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) picked up the win in net for RIT making four saves. Murray picked up her 20th career shutout win for RIT, breaking the school record of 19, previously held by Jill Turner. Brooke Seavitt took the loss for Fisher making seven saves.
Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) had a good scoring chance for RIT in the 29th minute when she fired a shot that Seavitt was able to tip over the crossbar and out of harms way.
Carly Finn gave Fisher its best chance to score in the first half when her shot appeared headed for the corner. But, Murray timed her leap perfectly, tipping the shot wide and out of play.
The Cardinals had the first good scoring chance of the second half from Jackie Romano, but Murray was perfectly placed and made the save keeping the game scoreless.
Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) had a nice run down the flank in the 60th
minute and was able to get by her defender and fired a shot to the opposite corner that just missed the post.
Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) had a chance from point-blank range a minute later off a loose ball inside the Cardinals penalty area. Her header from inside the six-yard box was right at Seavitt who made the save.
In the first overtime, Fisher's Brooke Whitman had a shot rattle off the crossbar off a corner kick that went straight down and off the line.
That set up Hunt's winner in the second overtime session.
RIT is off until Tuesday, September 16 when the Tigers travel to SUNY Geneseo to take on the 23rd ranked Knights at 4 p.m.
