No. 21 women's soccer opens 2014 season with 2-0 win over No. 25 SUNY Oneonta

ROCHESTER, NY- The No. 21 RIT (1-0-0) women's soccer team opened the 2014 season in style with a big 2-0 win over No. 25 SUNY Oneonta (0-1-0), on Friday afternoon from a sunbathed Tiger Stadium as part of the Rachel Miller Memorial Tournament. Juniors Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) and Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) each netted goals for the Tigers. May also added an assist.

Shots were 12-8 in favor of RIT. Senior goalkeeper, Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) made three saves, earning her first shutout win of the season and 17th of her RIT career. Kelly Murphy took the loss in net for Oneonta, making four saves.

Ornellas gave RIT a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on her first goal of the season. She headed a ball into the top shelf off of a perfectly served corner kick from May. RIT was able to get several more shots off in the first half, firing nine shots.

"It is obviously great to start the season off with a win," said fifth-year head coach Liz Masterson. "We were able to learn a lot about the team and what we need to work on to become the team we are striving to be."

RIT had a tougher second half getting outshot by SUNY Oneonta 6-3.  The Tigers were able to hold off the Red Dragons with a strong defense of Kiana Richards (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake), Emily Shoemaker (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena), Gwen Neuhaus (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac), and Ehlana Gray (Sewickley, PA/Avonworth).

May gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute on her first goal of the season. She dodged Murphy, with a breakaway ball and placed her shot on the open net. May finished the day with a game-high three points.

"It was a complete team effort," said Masterson. "We are happy with the full 90 minutes of work that was put into that win."

The Tigers are now 6-1-0 all-time against the Red Dragons, avenging a 1-0 loss to them at the Mayor's Cup in Oneonta last season.

RIT will take on Allegheny College on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. for day two of the Rachael Miller tournament in Tiger Stadium.Â
