ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (4-9, 1-6 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team returned to action on Saturday afternoon, losing to William Smith College (7-7, 7-1 Liberty League), 13-6 on Senior Day at RIT's Turf Field. The class of 2014,
Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool),
Aylannah Dylag (Canton, CT/Canton) and
Cori VanKerkhove (East Irondequoit, NY/Eastridge) were honored prior to the start of today's game.
Corrina Mandell (Corning, NY/Corning East) led RIT with two goals.
Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) had a goal and an assist, and
Holly Leone (Centerport, NY/Harborfields),
Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and
Mariah Hettel (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena) each scored a goal.
Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) took the loss in net, making 10 saves.
William Smith out-shot RIT, 31-23, while the Tigers won the ground ball battle, 40-26. The Tigers won 11 draw controls, to 10 for the Herons. RIT went 16-of-24 on clearing attempts and were 0-for-3 on free position attempts.
Hannah Connolly led William Smith with eight points on five goals and three assists. Katie Sipple added five points on three goals and two assists, while Meg Hannan and Geneva Calder each scored two goals. Sarah Honan picked up the win in net for the Herons making 15 saves.
Tied 1-1 in the first half, William Smith ran off four straight goals, taking a 5-1 lead on Connolly's third goal of the half. Consecutive goals from Sarkis and Hettel at 12:29 and 4:46 respectively cut the William Smith lead to 5-3. Hannan tallied a man-up goal with 1:12 to play in the opening half off a feed from Emy Stratton giving the Herons a 6-3 halftime lead.
Connolly opened the scoring in the second half, tallying her fifth of the game at 29:25, giving William Smith a 7-3 lead. Goals from Mandell and Leone midway through the half cut the Herons lead to 8-5.
However, William Smith would rattle off four straight goals, taking a commanding 12-5 lead on Hannan's free position goal with 6:46 to play. Bingo added a late goal for the Tigers to make it a 13-6 final.
RIT returns to action on Friday, April 25 when the Tigers face Bard College at 4 p.m. in Annondale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
