ROCHESTER, NY - The RIT women's tennis team (1-3) picked up its first win of the 2013-14 season, rallying to defeat Nazareth College (9-9) by a score of 5-4 at the Gordon Field House on Tuesday afternoon. RIT won four of the six singles matches to claim the victory.
With the match tied at 4-4, RIT's
Margaret Barnstien (Tacoma, WA/Spanaway Lake) gave RIT the decisive point, defeating Carlee Hastings of Nazareth by a score of 6-0, 6-2. It was Barnstein's first singles win of the season.
Nazareth held a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches. The duo of
Maite Vera Antelo (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Mayor San Loranzo) and
Kelsie Redburn (Byram, NJ/Pope John XXIII) earned RIT's lone point at second doubles, rolling to an 8-1 victory over Elizabeth Crane and Krista Pagan. Nazareth won an excellent duel at first doubles, as Alison Tepas and Ami Petosa defeated
Elizabeth McGrail (Rockford, IL/Guilford) and
Sara Bjork (Gansevoort, NY/Saratoga Springs), 9-8, winning the tiebreaker, 7-3.
Vera Antelo exacted revenge on Tepas, who won the first match between the two in the Fall, rolling to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at first singles. With the win, Vera Antelo improved to 5-4 this season. Bjork defeated Jean McCarthy at seconds singles, 6-1, 6-2, while McGrail earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Petosa at third singles. Bjork improved to 3-4, while McGrail upped her mark to 3-5/
RIT is back in action on Sunday, April 6 with a road contest at St. Lawrence University that gets underway at 10 a.m.
