ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (1-0) women's lacrosse team opened the 2014 season with a 9-7 win over SUNY Oswego (1-1) on a sunny but chilly Turf Field on the campus of RIT Friday afternoon.
Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) led RIT with four goals, while
Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) added three goals in her first collegiate game.
Goals from Sarkis and Bingo inside the last 1:20 proved to be the difference for RIT. Sarkis scored an unassisted goal with 1:20 to play, breaking a 7-7 tie. Bingo added a free position goal with 10 seconds to play to seal the win for the Tigers.
RIT held a 24-17 shot advantage, and a 27-13 ground ball edge. Each team won nine draw controls, while the Tigers went 14-of-21 on clearing attempts. RIT was 4-of-11 on free position attempts, while the Lakers went 1-for-4.
Sarkis led RIT with four goals. Bingo had three goals, while
Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Corinna Mandell each scored a goal. Mandell also won six draw controls and a had a ground ball.
Eva D'Ignazio (Swarthmore, PA/The Agnes Irwin School) had three caused turnovers and
Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) picked up the win in net, making six saves.
Erannan Shattuck, Esther Gabriel and Kelsey Henderson each scored two goals to pace the Lakers. Emily Lange added a goal and Lindsey Eggers and Grace Rinaldi each had an assist. Nikki Greco took the loss in net, making nine saves.
Gabriel opened the scoring for Oswego at the 27:18 mark of the first half off an assist from Shattuck.
Bingo tied the game at 1-1 on her first collegiate goal at the 26:37 mark of the first half on a free position attempt. Gabriele made it 2-1 Oswego on her second goal of the half, scoring off an assist from Eggers with 18:17 to play in the first half.
Bingo tallied her second goal of the half with 5:20 to play on a free position attempt, tying the score at 2-2.
Goals from Mandell and Sarkis to open the second half gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead. Mandell scored on a free position attempt, while Sarkis drove to the net scoring an unassisted goal with 23:50 to play.
Shattuck and Lange scored back-to-back goals for Oswego, tying the score at 4-4 with 19:53 to play on Lange's goal off an assist from Gabriel.
The Tigers rattled off three straight goals, two coming from Sarkis and one from Caruso with 14:53 remaining in the second half, giving the Tigers a 7-4 lead. The Lakers answered with a three-goal run of its own, tying the score at 7-7 on Henderson's second goal of the game with 4:14 to play in regulation.
After a RIT timeout, Sarkis drove the ball from behind the Oswego net, giving RIT an 8-7 lead on her fourth goal of the game.
Bingo added an insurance goal with 11 seconds to play in the game off a free position attempt extending the Tigers lead to 9-7.
RIT is back in action on Wednesday with a home contest against SUNY Geneseo that gets underway at 4 p.m.
