ERIE, PA – Juniors
Ali Binnington (Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs) and
Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets) of the RIT women's hockey team garnered year end honors, as College Hockey America held its 2013-14 postseason banquet at the Ambassador Banquet and Conference Center in Erie, Pa. on Thursday, March 7. Binnington was named the CHA Regular Season Goaltender of the Year, while Grigg earned All-CHA second team accolades.
Binnington has enjoyed a tremendous season in net for the Tigers to earn the CHA Regular Season Goaltender of the Year honor, despite not being named to All-CHA first or second team, which is voted on by the league's coaches. In league play, Binnington led all CHA goaltenders with an impeccable 1.35 goals against average and .955 save percentage in 14 league games. She was a six-time CHA Goaltender of the Week this season, having won each of the last three weeks
Binnington enters the final weekend of the season having stopped 147 of her last 151 shots faced during RIT's five-game winning streak (.974 save percentage). Overall, she is 14-9-2 with a 1.82 goals against average and .940 save percentage to go along with six shutouts this season and 14 for her RIT career, second most in school history. Binnington is sixth nationally in save percentage, tied for fifth in shutouts, and has the 11th best goals against average in Division I.
Grigg, a defenseman, has enjoyed a tremendous season on both ends of the ice. She leads all RIT defensemen and is currently fifth on the team in scoring with 19 points on two goals and 17 assists. Her 19 points were fourth among CHA defensemen in scoring. On the defensive end, Grigg has blocked a league-best 111 shots, including 34 over the past six games. She is a major reason why RIT has allowed just four goals in its last five games heading into the championship weekend. For her career, Grigg has not missed a game, playing in 102 contests, with 12 goals and 43 assists.
RIT, the No. 3 seed in the CHA Tournament, will face second-seed Robert Morris, who is ranked No. 10 nationally in the second semifinal from the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Friday. Top-seed Mercyhurst will host No. 4 Syracuse in the first semifinal at 4 p.m. The two winners will meet in the championship game on Saturday at 3 p.m.
