WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- The RIT (2-3) women's lacrosse team was defeated 19-4 by No. 3 Middlebury College (6-0) in non-conference action from The Spring Fling Tournament in West Palm Beach, Florida on Tuesday morning.
Shots were 29-10 in favor of the Panthers. Middlebury held a 25-14 ground ball edge, and won 16-of-24 draw controls. RIT was 11-of-15 on clearing attempts and was 1-for-4 on free position chances. Middlebury was 12-of-13 on clears and went 9-of-10 on free position attempts. Middlebury head coach Missy Foote picked up her 400th career win.
Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima),
Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool),
Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) and
Sydney DaCosta (New Bedford, MA/Bishop Stang) each scored for the Tigers, while Corinna Mandell added an assist.
Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) got the start in net, making three saves.
Elizabeth Hughes (Williamsville, NY/Williamsville South) played the final 42 minutes, making five saves.
Cori VanKerkhove (East Irondequoit, NY/Eastridge),
Claire Foggo (Windham, NH/Central Catholic) and DaCosta led RIT with two caused turnovers apiece.
Laurel Pascal led Middlebury with four goals and an assist. Bridget Instrum tallied three goals, while Liza Herzog, Mary O'Connell and Alli Sciaretta each scored two goals for the Panthers. Alyssa Palomba got the win in net for Middlebury, making two saves. Medeleine Kinker played the final 18 minutes, making two saves.
Middlebury opened the game scoring the first six goals, taking a 6-0 lead on Herzog's second goal of the half at 22:55. Pascal also scored two early goals for the Panthers.
DaCosta broke the Middlebury run, tallying her fourth goal of the season at 19:41 of the first half. After a pair of Middlebury goals made it 8-1, Bingo converted a free position attempt for RIT at 15:31 of the opening half, making it 8-2 Panthers.
Caruso tallied her sixth goal of the season with 6:41 to play in the first half, cutting the score to 11-3. Sarkis scored with 21 seconds to play in the first half off an assist from Mandell making it 13-4 at the half.
Middlebury added five more goals in the second half for a 19-4 finish.
RIT returns to action on Thursday, March 27 when the Tigers face SUNY Potsdam at 11:30 a.m. in West Palm Beach, Florida.
