Sarkis scores school record 10 goals as women's lacrosse beats SUNY Potsdam 13-12

WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- Sophomore midfielder Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) tallied a RIT single-game record record 10 goals as the Tigers women's lacrosse team (3-3) held off SUNY Potsdam (3-3) 13-12 in non-conference action from the Spring Fling Tournament at West Palm Beach, Fla. on Thursday morning. The Tigers wrap up their Spring Break trip with a 1-1 record.

Sarkis scored four goals in the first half and six in the second half, breaking the old record of nine goals set by Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) last season versus the University of Rochester. Sarkis added an assist, giving her an 11-point game, tying the school record set by Sarah Maneri against Wells on April 5, 2001, and Vakiener, done on March 30, 2012 vs. Skidmore.

Nicole Bingo (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder), Corinna Mandell and Syndey DaCosta each had a goal for the Tigers. Caitlin Conway (Landisville, PA/Hempfield) picked up the win in net, making nine saves.

Shots were 32-31 in favor of the Bears, and SUNY Potsdam held a 21-19 ground ball edge. RIT won 12-of-26 draw controls and were 17-of-17 on clearing attempts. The Tigers went 6-of-12 on free position chances.

Potsdam took an early 2-0 lead on two straight goals by Bailey Weigel to open the game. Sarkis answered back for RIT with two straight goals. The first coming off a free position attempt, while the second came unassisted with 19:56 to play in the first half, tying the score at 2-2.

The Bears rattled off three straight goals, taking a 5-2 lead on a goal by Maggie McCabe with 7:05 to play in the first half. McCabe scored off a feed from Bri McClusky that gave the Bears a three goal lead. Sarkis tallied two straight free position goals late in the first half to pull the Tigers to within one goal at 5-4.

Michaela Cole scored off a feed from Weigel with 1:13 to play in the first half, giving the Bears a 6-4 lead at the break.

Alyssa Ferenczy opened the second-half scoring for Potsdam with an unassisted goal early in the half, giving Potsdam a 7-4 lead.

The Tigers came roaring back, scoring seven straight goals, taking its first lead with 14:39 to play in regulation on a goal by Sarkis. She scored five of RIT's seven goals in the run, while Mandell and DaCosta also scored for RIT.

Potsdam came back with a three-goal run of its own, cutting the RIT lead to 11-10 with 5:01 to play in Weigel's fourth goal of the game. She scored two of the three Bears goals in the run, while Bri McClusky had the other. Bingo and Sarkis answered for RIT with consecutive goals late in regulation giving the Tigers a bit of a cushion at 13-10. Sarkis' goal was her 10th of the game and turned out to be the game-winner.

That would prove helpful, as Potsdam got two late goals from Weigel and Cole, cutting RIT's lead to 13-12.

Weigel finished with six points for Potsdam on five goals and an assist. McClusky added two goals and dished out four assists. Cole and Ferenczy each had two goals for the Bears, while Jen Chmiel took the loss in net, making 11 saves.
