Brad Mayville (Marion, NY/Wayne) advanced to the NCAA National Tournament, as the RIT wrestling team placed 15th out of 17 teams with 22 points at the NCAA Regional meet hosted by York College on Sunday. Messiah was the team champion with 109 points.
Wrestling at 149 lbs., Mayville placed third, earning his spot in the national tournament. Mayville defeated Ryan Fowler of Ohio Northern by fall in the first round and beat Luke Marcelli of Case Western Reserve by a score of 5-2 in the quarterfinals. Mayville fell to Daniel Mirman of John Caroll in the semifinals. In the consolations, Mayville defeated Seth Lansberry of Lycoming, before pinning Jordan Dyer of Brockport State in 1:29 in the third place match, earning the NCAA berth. Mayville is now 31-10 this season.
Rory Bruce (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda),
Jake Sepor (Stafford, NY/Pavilion), and
Eddie McBride (Germantown, MD/Northwest) also won matches for the Tigers on Sunday. Sepor went 2-2 at 141 lbs., while Bruce finished 1-2 at 133 lbs. and McBride was also 1-2 at 285 lbs.
Mayville will compete at the NCAA Championships on March 14-15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
