Mallory Apperson's bucket with one second to play in overtime gives women's basketball crucial win over Bard



ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Mallory Apperson (Bemus Point, NY/Maple Grove) drained a jumper from 12 feet out with one second to play in overtime to lift the RIT (10-10, 6-5 Liberty League) women's basketball team to a 71-70 win over Bard College (1-18, 0-19 Liberty League) from Clark Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley), who led the Tigers with 23 points, sent the game into overtime with a deep 3-pointer with six seconds to play in regulation.

The Tigers trailed by 10 points with 8:16 to play in regulation when Tytravia Riley nailed a 3-pointer for the Raptors, giving Bard a 54-44 lead.

The Tigers closed out the final 8:16 on a 19-9 run, tying the game on Palmitesso's three with 6.3 seconds to play. She scored nine of RIT's 19 points down the stretch.

RIT shot 37.3 percent from the floor on 25-of-67 shooting. The Tigers 3-of-13 from behind the arc, and were 18-of-27 from the foul line.

Palmitesso led RIT with 23 points. Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) finished with 11 points, six rebounds, two assists, three blocks and two steals. Apperson scored eight points, grabbed three rebounds, one assist and a steal.

Riley led Bard with 23 points and 18 rebounds. Joanna Regan scored 12 points, while Liz Freud scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Raptors shot 40.7 percent from the floor on 22-of-54 shooting. Bard went 5-of-20 from three-point land, and was 21-of-40 from the foul line.

Bard trailed 16-13 late in the first half when Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) made a pair of free throws. The Raptors closed out the half outscoring RIT 19-11 over the final 7:56, leading the Tigers 32-27 at the half. Riley led Bard with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Palmitesso scored nine for RIT.

The Raptors continued to lead late into the second half shooting 40.9 percent from the floor. Late in the second half, Riley made a pair of free throws, giving the Raptors a 59-54 lead. Wheeler answered on RIT's next possession with layup, pulling RIT to within three at 59-56. Bianka Bell gave Bard a 63-60 lead when she made 1-of-2 free throws with :27 seconds to play in regulation.

After a timeout, RIT moved the ball around to Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt). She found Palmitesso open on the wing, and she fired a deep 3-pointer with a defender running out at her, nailing the shot tying the score at 63-63.

Bell had a three at the buzzer for Bard that came off the rim, sending the game to overtime.

Wheeler scored the first bucket for RIT in overtime, giving the Tigers a 65-63 lead. Bard answered with a quick 5-0 spurt, taking a 68-65 lead on a jumper by Abbey Labrecque with 2:04 to play. Wheeler drained two more free throws with 1:16 to play to pull RIT within one at 68-67. After a missed Bard shot, Maria Edwards (Forrest Hill, MD/The Carroll School) was fouled with 36 seconds to play. She calmly made both ends of the one-and-one giving RIT a 69-68 lead.

Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt) fouled Bell on Bard's next possession. Bell made both her free throws, giving Bard a 70-69 with eight seconds to play in overtime.

RIT inbounded the ball, eventually getting the ball to Apperson who drove the length of the floor. She pulled up from 12 feet and hit nothing but net on the jumper with one second to play for the game winning shot.

RIT returns to action on Tuesday, February 11, visiting Union College for a 6 p.m. contest.
