JP Reagan scores career-high 26 as men's basketball keeps conference tournament hopes alive with win at Rensselaer

TROY, NY – Sophomore JP Reagan (Cortland, NY/Cortland) scored a career-high 26 points to lead the RIT (15-9, 9-6 Liberty League) men's basketball team to a 100-77 victory over Rensselaer (8-16, 6-9 Liberty League) on Friday evening in Liberty League action from East Campus Arena. With the win, the Tigers keep their Liberty League Tournament hopes alive. If RIT beats Skidmore College on Saturday, and Clarkson loses to Vassar, the Tigers will claim third place in the Liberty League standings.

Reagan connected on 10-of-14 shots from the floor, including 6-of-7 from 3-point range for 26 points. Miguel Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) scored 15 points, while Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) turned in a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Chase Almond led RPI with 14 points. Reggie Colas chipped in with 13 points, while Nick Keefe had nine points.

RIT started to pull away just three minutes in the contest, creating a nine-point cushion on a layup by Brendan Reinert (Wheatfield, NY/Starpoint) with 14:40 to play giving RIT a 20-11 lead.

A lay-up from RPI sophomore Nash Widowski trimmed the RIT lead to 20-15. RIT went on a 9-4 burst to take a 28-19 lead at the midway point of the stanza.

A triple from Joe Stortini (Red Hook, NY/Loomis Chaffee) extended the Tigers lead to 38-25, before a three from Rensselaer senior Sean Dempsey and a pair of free-throws from Widowski made it a 38-30 Tigers lead with just under seven minutes left in the half.

RIT outscored the Engineers 15-10 to close out opening 20 minutes, taking a 53-40 lead to the break.

The Tigers were hot from the floor in the opening half, shooting 59.4 percent. The Tigers went 5-of-11 from behind the arc and were 10-of-15 from the foul line.

Davis led RIT with 11 first-half points on 4-of-6 shooting. Reagan added 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.

The Tigers lead ballooned to 20 points less than seven minutes into the second half, thanks to a lay-up from Reinert, who finished with 12 points.

Rensselaer managed to climb within 20 points and several occasions, but no closer, as RIT finished the game shooting 54.8 percent from the floor on 34-for-62 shooting. The Tigers went 9-of-21 from behind the arc and were 21-of-28 from the foul line. RIT held a 45-38 rebounding edge and scored 46 points in the paint.

It is the sixth time that RIT has scored at least 90 points this season.

RIT closes out the regular season on Saturday afternoon at Skidmore College. Tip-off in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. is scheduled for 4 p.m. RIT beat the Thoroughbreds 83-77 back on January 25.
