CANTON, NY -- The RIT (11-6, 5-3 Liberty League) men's basketball team outscored St. Lawrence (6-11, 2-6 Liberty League) 14-1 over the final 5:28 en route to a 70-65 win in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon. Senior
Brendan Reinert (Wheatfield, NY/Starpoint) scored seven straight points in the final run to the finish for the Tigers.
Trailing 64-56 with 5:28 to play, the Tigers rattled off nine straight points, tying the score at 64-64 on a layup by Reinert with 2:55 to play. He finished with 13 points, including seven straight points down the stretch to spark the Tigers comeback. With 2:03 left, Reinert hit 1-of-2 free-throws to give RIT the lead.
Janpeter Brase made 1-of-2 free throws for the Saints with 51 seconds to play in regulation, tying the score at 65-65. That would be the final points for the Saints who went cold from the floor down the stretch.
On RIT's next possession,
Jameel Balenton (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers) drained a 3-pointer with 24 seconds to play, giving RIT a 68-65 lead.
Brady Condlin missed a layup on the Saints' next possession withJPÂ Reagan snagging the rebound. Off a St. Lawrence foul, Reagan stepped to the line and made both free throws inside the final 10 seconds to clinch the win for the Tigers.
Reagan led RIT with 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Reinert chipped in 13 points off the bench, while Balenton scored 12 points for the Tigers who shot 51.0 percent from the floor on 25-of-49 shooting. RIT was 8-of-24 from behind the arc and were 12-of-14 from the foul line.
RIT came out firing in the first half, shooting 62.5 percent from the floor on 15-of-24 shooting. The Tigers made 5-of-11 from behind the arc and were 6-for-6 from the foul line, leading 41-38 at the half. Reagan led RIT with 14 first-half points, while Davis chipped in six points.
The Tigers led by as many as 10 points in the first half, coming with 1:56 to play on a layup by
Sheldon Clay (Detroit, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit). St. Lawrence closed out the half on a 9-3 run, cutting RIT's lead to 41-38 on a free throw by Kyle Kobis with two second to play in the half.
Brase led St. Lawrence with 14 points and seven rebounds. Condlin added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Kieran Miller scored 10 points for the Saints who shot 40.4 percent from the floor on 23-of-57 shooting.
RIT returns to action on Tuesday, February 4 when the Tigers host Hobart College at 8 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gymnasium.
