ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (8-4-5) women's soccer team is the No. 4 seed in the 2014 Liberty League Women's Soccer Tournament and will face No. 1 seed William Smith College (13-2-1) in the semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 1:30 p.m. on the campus of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The advancing team will face the winner between No. 2 seed Rensseaer and No. 3 seed St. Lawrence in the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 9 at the highest remaining seed.
RIT finished the regular season tied for fourth with Union in the Liberty League standings with 11 points after a 3-1 loss to William Smith in last Saturday's regular season finale. The Tigers earned the fourth seed by way of tie breaking scenarios. It is the third straight season the Tigers have faced the Herons in the conference tournament.
William Smith, the seven-time defending Liberty League and 2013 Division III National Champion, enters Wednesday as the top seed in this year's tournament. The Herons were 8-0 in Liberty League play, and come into the game ranked seventh nationally.
RIT comes into Wednesday's game averaging 1.06 goals per game, having outscored its opponents 18-15. Senior
Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY/Sauquoit) leads the Tigers in scoring and goals with 10 points on five goals. Junior
Quincey Ornellas (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark) is second on the team with eight points on three goals and two assists, while
Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) is third with five points on a goal and three assists.
William Smith is the top defensive team in the Liberty League and is ranked 13
th in Division III, allowing 0.42 goals per game. The Herons have allowed just seven goals this season, including 10 shut outs. Freshman Nicole McGlinchy has played the majority of the minutes in net for William Smith, posting a 12-1-1 record, a .853 save percentage, four shut outs and a 0.38 goals against average.
The Tigers are fourth in the Liberty League allowing 0.88 goals per game. RIT has held its opponents to 15 goals in 17 games, including eight shut outs. Senior
Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) has a 8-4-5 record this season with seven shut outs, a 0.82 goals against average and a .831 save percentage.
William Smith enters Wednesday averaging 2.88 goals per game, having outscored its opponents 46-7 this season. The Herons have scored two or more goals 11 time games. Madeline Buckley leads William Smith in scoring with 24 points on 10 goals. Kara Shue is second in scoring with 19 points on five goals and nine assists, while Krista Longo is third with 18 points on seven goals and four assists.
William Smith leads the all-time series between the two schools, 33-0-2. Last weekend, three different Herons tallied goals and Buckley dished out two assists in the win.
Paige Byers (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Hill) scored her first collegiate goal for RIT. Last season, William Smith beat RIT 1-0 in the Liberty League title game. Caitlyn Mitchell tallied the game's lone goal in the 40th minute.
