TROY, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (6-8-1) dropped its fourth straight contest, 4-1 to host Rensselaer (2-10-2) from the Houston Field House on Friday night.
Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets) scored RIT's lone goal, 2:23 into the game before the Engineers scored four unanswered tallies. Shayna Tomlinson, Marisa Raspa, Ali Svoboda, and Taylor Mahoney scored for Rensselaer.
Both teams fired 27 shots on goal. In net, Rensselaer goaltender Kelly O'Brien was strong, stopping 26 of 27 RIT shots. RIT goaltender
Brooke Stoddart (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale) made 23 saves in defeat.
Just three penalties were called all evening, none after the first period, as the game went just an hour and 49 minutes. RIT was scoreless on its lone power-play attempt of the game, while Rensselaer was 1-for-2.
"I thought we did a lot of good things and played hard, but had a 10-minute lapse in the first period, where we allowed three goals and that was the difference," said RIT head coach
Scott McDonald. "Bottom line, we have to bury more chances offensively. We are fighting the puck and missing key offensive chances right now."
Grigg got the Tigers on the board with her fifth goal of the season just 2:23 into the contest, swatting in a rebound from the side of the net after
Mackenzie Stone (Kars, Ontario/South Carleton) caused a turnover and fired a shot that O'Brien stopped.
The Tigers had two great chances to go up 2-0 moments later, as
Caitlin Wallace (Brantford, Ontario/Assumption Collegiate) had a point-blank shot from the slot stopped by O'Brien and
Marissa Maugeri (Ajax, Ontario/Durham West Lightning) made a great individual move on a rush, going wide around a RPI defender before cutting to the net and having her attempt poked away by O'Brien.
The Engineers would answer with three goals in the final half of the period to go up 3-1 after 20 minutes of play.
Tomlinson would tie the game at 1-1 at the 10:06 mark, putting home a rebound from in front of the net. At the 16:20 mark, Raspa would take advantage of a misplay from Stoddart behind the RIT net on a dump in and have the wide open net for her second goal of the season. Just as a RIT penalty expired late in the period, Svoboda would fire in a loose puck in the slot after a centering pass was blocked by a Tiger defender.
The Tigers came out and had several great chances in the second period, but could not beat O'Brien. Stone had a great chance from the slot thwarted by O'Brien and then moments later, looked to have an open net from just inside the face-off circle after a wild scramble in front of the net, but Engineers defenseman Kathryn Schilter was able to block the shot.
Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School) was robbed by O'Brien on a deflection in front of the RPI net, right before two great chances by Maugeri. Maugeri's first chance O'Brien stopped from the slot on the rush off a rising shot, the second a nifty deflection in front off a shot from the right point that somehow stayed out.
In the third, RIT had a few chances early, but were unable to capitalize. With just 2:20 left, Mahoney put home a rebound in front to complete the scoring.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 11-6-4. Rensselaer has now won the last five meetings. This was the first contest between the two schools in over nine years, as Rensselaer moved to Division I in 2005 and RIT in 2012. Both teams were members of the Division III ECAC East conference until 2005.
The two teams wrap up their weekend series on Saturday, once again from the Houston Field House at 4 p.m.
