Game Recap: Women's Hockey | | Joe Venniro - Executive Director of Sports Information

Brown scores twice and Rackleff picks up second shutout, as women's hockey blanks Rensselaer

TROY, NY – The RIT women's hockey team (7-8-3) snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating host Rensselaer (2-11-2) by a score of 3-0 from the Houston Field House on Saturday afternoon. Celeste Brown (Great Falls, MT/National Sports Academy) scored a pair of goals, while goaltender Jetta Rackleff (Bend, OR/Summit) stopped all 20 shots she faced for her second shutout of the season.

Brown scored the game-winner in the first period and added an insurance marker in the third period, while Marissa Maugeri (Ajax, Ontario/Durham West Lightning) added a second period tally. Rackleff was stout in net, picking up her second shutout in the month of November.

RIT out-shot Rensselaer, 28-20. RIT was 0-for-3 on the power-play, while Rensselaer was 0-for-4.

"Overall, it was a great win for us," said RIT head coach Scott McDonald. "After a tough loss yesterday, it was nice to see us respong this way. Jetta made some key saves throughout and our defense was outstanding, keeping RPI to the perimeter and blocking shots. Our forwards did a good job capitalizing on their opportunities."

The Tigers were strong defensively in the first period, allowing just five shots in grabbing the 1-0 lead.

Brown tallied her team-best sixth goal of the season at the 10:39 mark, taking a feed from Cassie Clayton (Pickering, Ontario/PEAC School) in the neutral zone, bursting into the Rensselaer zone, and whistling a hard wrist shot from the right circle past O'Brien to the far side to make it 1-0 RIT.

The Tigers just missed making it 2-0 late in the period on the power-play, as Morgan Scoyne (Drumbo, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) had two whacks at a loose puck in the crease, but O'Brien came across to keep both shots out.

Haley Northcote (Cumberland, Ontario/Minnesota State) made a brilliant defensive play late in the period, blocking a great scoring chance on a 2-on-1 odd-man rush for the Engineers.

Maugeri gave RIT a 2-0 lead with 3:40 left in the second, converting a rebound after Lindsay Grigg (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Hornets) was stopped on a breakaway. Haley Northcote (Cumberland, Ontario/Minnesota State) sent Grigg in on the breakaway. The goal was Maugeri's first of the season. She led RIT in scoring with 28 points in 2013-14.

Brown made it 3-0 Tigers midway through the period to close out the scoring with her seventh of the season with assists going to Jess Paton (Woodstock, Ontario/Waterloo K-W Rangers) and Morgan Scoyne (Drumbo, Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres).

Play got a little chippy late, but the RIT defense and Rackleff held on for the shutout, RIT's fifth of the season.

RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 12-6-4 and snapped a five-game losing streak against Rensselaer. Both teams were members of the Division III ECAC East conference until 2005.

Last night, Rensselaer scored the final four goals to skate away with a 4-1 win over the Tigers. Grigg scored RIT's lone goal.

The Tigers return to action next Saturday, Dec. 6 with a single road contest at College Hockey America foe Syracuse. That game gets underway at 7 p.m.
