Women's soccer closes out regular season with 3-1 loss at No. 8 William Smith

GENEVA, NY -- The RIT (8-4-5, 3-3-3 Liberty League) women's soccer team closed out the 2014 regular season with a 3-1 loss to No. 8 William Smith College (13-2-1, 8-0-0 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Cozzens Field Saturday afternoon. Freshman Paige Byers (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Hill) scored her first collegiate goal for the Tigers.

Shots were 18-4 in favor of William Smith, who took four corner kicks to none for the Tigers. Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) took the loss in net for RIT making seven saves. Nicole McGlinchy picked up the win for William Smith making three saves.

Kara Shue scored first for the Herons off a pass from Madeline Buckley. She sent a pass from the right side of the box to Shue out in front, who placed her shot into the left side of the goal.

William Smith opened up its lead in the second half when Brie Ruane notched her seventh goal of the season in the 64th minute. She stopped a Tiger clear attempt and scored from right out in front to make it 2-0.

Krista Longo extended the lead to 3-0 in the 70th minute, when Buckley tapped a short pass to Longo on her left and Longo's low rolling shot found the back of the net for her seventh goal this season.

Byers broke through for RIT in the 84th minute. Her shot from about 20 yards out came off a pass from Maxine Culhane (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) and slipped passed McGlinchy. It was the first collegiate goal for Byers.

Despite the loss, RIT will be the fourth seed in next week's Liberty League Tournament. The Tigers will face top seeded William Smith on Wednesday, Nov. 5 in Geneva, N.Y.
