Women's soccer falls to No. 7 William Smith in Liberty League Tournament Semifinal

GENEVA, NY -- The No. 4 seed RIT (8-5-5) women's soccer team was defeated, 3-0 by top-seeded William Smith College (14-2-1) in the Liberty League Tournament semifinals from Cozzens Field on a sunny, Wednesday afternoon. The Herons, ranked seventh in this week's NSCAA Division III poll, advance to face St. Lawrence on Saturday in championship game. The Herons broke a scoreless tie after halftime with three second half goals.

Shots were 25-5 in favor of William Smith, who took six corner kicks to none for the Tigers. Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) took the loss in net for RIT, making 10 saves. Nicole McGlinchy picked up the win for William Smith, with one save.

RIT's best scoring chance in the first half came 25 minutes into the game when the Tigers put the Herons defense under pressure. Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) fired a shot from inside the William Smith penalty area that was blocked by a Herons defender. The ball came out to Ehlana Gray (Sewickley, PA/Avonworth) who fired a shot from long distance that McGlinchy was able to save.

After a scoreless first half, William Smith took a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 50th minute. Kara Shue made a run down the right side, sending a service into the RIT penalty area. Madeline Buckley fired a one-timer into the net for the eventual game-winner.

Shue gave the Herons a 2-0 lead with her goal in the 59th minute. Buckley took a back-heel pass and sent a service into the RIT box that Shue touched into the net for her sixth goal of the season. Krista Longo made it 3-0 William Smith with her goal in the 82nd minute off a feed from Brenna Kincaid.

Late in regulation, senior Kiana Richards (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) drove through the heart of the William Smith defense. McGlinchy came off her line to scoop up the ball just before Richards could get a touch on the ball.

RIT will now await a potential at-large NCAA bid. The Tigers made the NCAA Tournament in both 2012 and 2013 and are 31-15-12 over the last three seasons.
