ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT men's hockey team kicked off the 2014-15 season and Gene Polisseni Center era by defeating Brock University of Ontario, 5-2 in front of a crowd of 2,973 fans.
Garrett McMullen (Churchville, NY/Trail Smoke Eaters) scored goals 12 seconds apart early in the first period to open the scoring, sending the crowd into a frenzy. The regular season or postseason record for the fastest two goals in RIT's Division I era is 13 seconds, set on March 27, 2010 in the NCAA Quarterfinal win over New Hampshire.
Matt Garbowsky (St. George, Ontario/Powell River Kings),
Alexander Kuqali (Pittsburgh, PA/Sioux City Musketeers), and
Michael Holland (Cambridge, MA/Chicago Steel) also scored for the Tigers.
Brad McGowan (Langley, British Columbia/Surrey Eagles) added two assists. In net, the duo of
Jordan Ruby (Tavistock, Ontario/Wellington Dukes) and
Ken MacLean (Concord, MA/Kalamazoo Wings) were strong. Ruby played the first half of the contest, stopping 18-of-19 shots. McLean played the final 29:56, making 15 saves on 16 shots.
Sammy Banga scored both Brock goals. In net, Clint Windsor made 32 saves.
RIT out-shot Brock, 37-35. RIT was 1-for-1 on the power-play, needing just 11 seconds to score that goal. Brock was 2-for-7 with the man-advantage.
"Overall, I thought we played pretty well," said RIT head coach
Wayne Wilson. "We were a little sloppy at times, but I thought our newcomers adjusted well and our goaltenders both did a good job. We are excited to start the regular season next weekend and welcome two tough teams in St. Lawrence and Clarkson here."
The Tigers came out flying in the opening period, spurred on by the loud home crowd, scoring three times to head to the locker room up 3-0.
McMullen tallied his first goal 2:59 into the game, using hard work to strip a Brock defender off the puck in the slot. He stumbled but was able to get back up, turn and fire a shot through the legs of Windsor.
On the ensuing faceoff, RIT won the draw, regrouped and came up the ice.
Mark Golberg (Ottawa, Ontario/Cumberland Grads) fed
Max Mikowski (Cheekotwaga, NY/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) in the neutral zone. Mikowski came into the Brock zone with a full head of steam and fired a shot from the right wing that Windsor stopped, but the rebound came right to a charging McMullen, who fired it from in close into the open side at the 3:11 mark.
Garbowsky made it 3-0 Tigers on the power-play at the 13:46 mark, deflecting a point shot from McGowan past Windsor just under the crossbar.
Brady Norrish (Strongfield, Saskatchewan/Yorkton Terriers) also assisted on the goal.
RIT upped its lead to 5-1 after 40 minutes of play. After Sammy Banga cut the RIT lead to 3-1 on a power-play 2:27 into the period, Kuqali gave RIT its three-goal lead back at the 10:32 mark, taking a perfect feed from
Danny Smith (Edmonton, Alberta/Sherwood Park Crusaders) at the left faceoff dot and hammering a shot past Windsor.
Brad Reid (Delta, British Columbia/Coquitlam Express) also assisted on the goal.
With 3:52 left in the period, Holland floated a perfectly placed wrist shot through traffic from the right point in for the goal. That play was set up by a strong cycle behind the net from McGowan, who kicked a pass to Mitchell. Mitchell came from behind the net back to the left side wall and fed Holland at the point.
RIT leads the all-time series between the two schools, 6-4-0.
