SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Junior forward Quiney Ornellas scored in the 56th minute to give the RIT (6-3-5, 2-2-2 Liberty League) women's soccer team a 1-0 win over the Skidmore College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Wachenheim Field on the campus of Skidmore College.
Skidmore outshot the Tigers 13-10 and had a 5-3 advantage in corners. Walsh made five saves, while
Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) stopped five shots, earning her sixth shutout of the season.?
RIT nearly got in front 1:23 into the contest, as
Elizabeth May (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Sutherland) turned past her defender at the right edge of the 18-yard box and ripped a shot towards the far post, but Skidmore goalkeeper Deirdre Walsh made a diving save to keep the game level.
The Thoroughbreds came close to equalizing in the 24th minute, but Arena Manning's left footed strike sailed just over the crossbar.
Anka Parzych (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) looked to have given the Tigers the lead in 33rd minute, sliding a strike past Walsh after getting onto the end of a
Maxine Culhane (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) through-ball, but the shot rolled just wide of the right post.
RIT controlled play in the opening stages of the second half, breaking the deadlock in the 56th minute from a corner.
Gwen Neuhaus (Woodbridge, VA/Potomac) rose to meet May's cross, heading the ball to the feet of Ornellas, who smashed home a strike from eight yards.
Skidmore quickly pressed for the tying goal, as Manning broke down the right wing and picked out Nicole LoRusso with a cross, but her header attempt landed comfortably into the hands of Tigers goalkeeper
Amanda Murray (Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls).
Emily Saliterman tested Murray in the 81st minute with a volley from 20 yards, but again the keeper was well positioned for the save.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 25 when the Tigers host Union College at 3 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
