Women's basketball scores a team-record 53 second-half points in 90-75 win at Keuka



KEUKA PARK, NY -- The RIT women's basketball team (5-5) scored a program-record 53 second half points en route to a 90-75 win at Keuka College (3-5) in non-conference action on Wednesday evening. The Tigers scored 53 points on 17-of-32 (53.1%) shooting in the second half, surpassing the old record of 52 that was done twice in 2008 and 2009.

Three players scored at least 20 points for the Tigers, led by senior #Kayla Wheeler (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) who had a game-high 24 points to go along with 16 rebounds. Classmate (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley)Jess Kramer (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-Dewitt)# scored a career-high 21 points, while #Courtney Tennant (Cortland, NY/Cortland) tallied 20 points. (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley)Ashlynn Palmitesso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley)# chipped in 15 points for the Tigers, who have now won two straight.

RIT shot 40.5 percent from the floor on 30-of-74 shooting. The Tigers were 9-of-32 from behind the arc, and went 21-of-26 from the foul line. RIT held a 50-48 rebounding edge, including 21 offesnive rebounds leading to 29 second-chance points.

The Tigers trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, but rallied to within five points on a layup by Wheeler with 1:32 to play. A bucket by Jessica Brandowski with 43 seconds to play in the opening half gave the Storm a 44-35 lead. A pair of Palmitesso free throws with :20 to play cut the Storm's lead to 44-37 at the half. Palmitesso led RIT with 12 first-half points, while Wheeler scored 11 and Kramer added eight.

Keuka built their lead back to 10 points early in the second half on a pair of buckets by Taylor Szwec.

The Tigers began heating up, going on a 12-2 run, tying the score at 49-49 on a three pointer by Kramer with 14:19 to play. Kramer scored five of RIT's 12 points in the run. RIT took the lead for good with 9:12 to play on a layup by Tennant. Her bucket off a feed from Wheeler gave the Tigers a 62-60 lead.

The Tigers would outscore the Storm 28-16 over the final 9:12, leading by as many as 16 points. Tennant scored 15 of her 20 points in the second half, while Wheeler and Kramer each scored 13 second-half points to pace the Tigers attack.

RIT returns to action on Tuesday, January 14 wen the Tigers face William Smith College at 6 p.m. at Bristol Gym on the campus of William Smith College.
