ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (10-5, 4-2 Liberty League) men's basketball team won its third straight game on Saturday with an 83-77 win over Skidmore College (9-7, 3-4 Liberty League) on Wounded Warrior Day at Clark Gym.
Senior
Jameel Balenton (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers) was one of four Tigers to score in double figures, tallying 17 points. Freshman
Sheldon Clay (Detroit, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit) added 16 points and six rebounds, while
Gabe Nicasio (Essex Junction, VT/Essex) added 14 points.
JP Reagan (Cortland, NY/Cortland) scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists. He blocked a shot and had three steals for RIT who shot 47.1 percent from the floor on 24-of-51 shooting. The Tigers were 7-of-23 from behind the arc and were 28-of-44 from the foul line.
Skidmore was led by Sophomore Aldin Medunjanin who scored 19 points. Erik Sanders added 18 points, while Eric Lowry scored 12 points for the Thoroughbreds who shot 44.3 percent from the floor on 27-of-61 shooting. Skidmore went 9-of-29 from behind the arc, while making 14-of-29 from the foul line.
RIT trailed 1-0 early, but took a 3-1 lead on a three pointer from freshman
Mitch Herman (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) at the 17:57 mark and never looked back. The Tigers led by as many as 16 points in the first half, leading 39-29 at the break. Nine different players scored for RIT in the opening half, led Reagan who had eight.
The Tigers gradually built their lead in the second half, leading by as many as 21 points on a pair of free throws from Balenton with 7:37 to play who went 11-of-13 from the foul line.
RIT led by 13 points with 53 seconds to play in regulation, but Skidmore was not done yet, going on an 11-2 run, pulling to within 79-75 on a 3-pointer by Isaac Carp with 18 seconds to play. Medunjanin scored five of Skidmore's 11 points in the run.
Desmond Scott (Murphy, TX/Plano East), Reagan and Nicasio made enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the late charging Thoroughbreds.
The Tigers scored 28 of their 83 points in the paint, while scoring 16 points off of 13 Skidmore turnovers. Skidmore held a slight 41-40 rebounding edge and scored 36 points in the paint and 17 points off of 15 RIT turnovers.
RIT is off until Friday, January 31 when the Tigers face Clarkson University at 8 p.m. in Potsdam, N.Y.
