Strong shooting first half lifts men's basketball to win over Union



ROCHESTER, NY -- The RIT (8-5, 2-2 Liberty League) men's basketball team shot 62.9 percent from the floor in the first half en route to a 94-79 win over Union College (5-8, 2-3 Liberty League) in Liberty League action from Clark Gym Tuesday evening. The win for the Tigers was the first win over the Dutchmen since the 2002-03 season.

Six players scored in double figures for RIT led by the trio of #Kamron Davis (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham)#, #JP Reagan (Cortland, NY/Cortland) and Miguel Lopez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/St. Francis) who each scored 15 points. (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker)Gabe Nicasio (Essex Junction, VT/Essex) added 14 and (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker)Brendan Reinert (Wheatfield, NY/Starpoint) scored 12. (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker)Jameel Balenton (Syracuse, NY/Christian Brothers)# added 10 points for the Tigers who shot 58.7 percent from the floor for the game on 37-of-63 shooting.

RIT made 9-of-19 three point attempts and were 11-of-15 from the foul line. The Tigers scored 42 of their 94 points in the paint and scored 11 points off of 11 Union turnovers.

Trailing by three early on, RIT took a 6-5 lead with 17:48 to play in the opening half off a 3-pointer by Nicasio. The Tigers never relinquished the lead, leading by as many as 16 points in the first half. RIT shot 62.9 percent from the floor in the opening half on 22-of-35 shooting. Reagan and Lopez led the Tigers with 11 first half points.

RIT built their lead to 23 points in the second half on a 3-pointer by #Sheldon Clay (Detroit, MI/University of Detroit Jesuit)# with 12:25 to play. The Tigers shot 53.6 percent from the floor in the second half, tallying 39 points.

Union shot 50 percent from the floor for the game on 30-of-60 shooting. The Dutchmen went 4-of-20 from behind the arc and were 15-of-29 from the foul line. Keith Callies led all scorers with 20 points for Union. Terrell Winney and William Hython each scored 18 fir the Dutchmen.

RIT returns to action on Friday, January 24 when the Tigers host Rensselaer at 8 p.m. on the floor of Clark Gym. Union hosts Hobart College on Tuesday, January 28.
