PITTSFORD, NY - The RIT volleyball team (4-4) snapped a three-match losing streak by rallying to defeat SUNY Geneseo (3-4) in five sets at the Golden Flyer Invitational hosted by Nazareth College on Saturday morning. The Tigers concluded the weekend by falling to Fredonia State (5-3) in three sets on Saturday afternoon to finish the tournament with a 1-3 mark, placing fourth. For the second straight weekend,
Sarah Szybist (Chicago, IL/Ramstein) earned All-Tournament Team honors.
In the opener, RIT won the first set over the Golden Knights handily, 25-12, before dropping the next two, 25-16, 25-18. In the fourth set, RIT trailed 23-22 before back-to-back kills by
Anna Valentine (Pittsford, NY/Pittsford Mendon) and
Lindsay Quandt (Houston, TX/Houston Christian) gave RIT the lead. Geneseo would tie the match at 24, then the two teams traded points. With the match tied at 25,
Emma Dowdy (Cocoa, FL/Edgewood) slammed a kill and
Amanda White (Watertown, NY/Watertown) recorded a service ace to get the Tigers even at two sets apiece with the 27-25 win. In the fifth set, RIT dominated, scoring the first four points en route to opening up leads of 6-1, 9-3, and 14-7 before White closed the set and match with a kill to make the set score 15-10.
Sarah Szybist (Chicago, IL/Ramstein) recorded her third 20-kill match in two weekends, while hitting .341 with four blocks.
Sara Martin (Rochester, NY/West Irondequoit) recorded 14 digs, nine kills, and six service aces. Dowdy dished out 32 assists, recorded 10 digs, and five service aces. White had four aces, and three blocks, while
Bethany Davis (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) and Valentine added 13 and 11 digs, repsectively.
RIT had a season-best 19 service aces in the win.
Tricia Baxley led the Golden Knights with 12 kills, while Erika Dannenfeiser had 41 assists. Lizzy Morton chipped in with 13 digs and 10 kills.
RIT struggled in the third place match of the weekend, falling to Fredonia in straight sets by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-15. The Tigers had just 15 kills and recorded 19 errors in the three set loss.
Davis led RIT with 13 digs, while Dowdy and
Arielle Pariente (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) had six assists apiece.
Lauren Gotsch (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) tallied six digs, while Szybist and Valentine led the Tigers with six and four kills, respectively.
Yesterday, RIT lost in four sets to host Nazareth and in five sets to Hilbert.
RIT will host the 25th annual RIT Invitational on Friday, Sept. 13 and Saturday, Sept. 14 at Clark Gym. RIT will play Brockport, Keuka, Potsdam, and Medaille over the two days. The Tigers first match will be against Brockport on Friday at 3 p.m.
